Movie Theaters Seeking Sites

 

Standard Theaters operates 42 screens at five locations in CA, HI, NV and OH.  The movie theaters occupy spaces of 8,000 sq.ft. to 35,000 sq.ft. in downtown store fronts, regional malls and strip centers.  Plans call for 12 openings in the coming 18 months.  Expansion will take place nationwide.  The company, which prefers to take over existing operations, typically signs leases running 20 years with five options running five years each.

Who's Opening and Where...

 

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-1575) plans to open a store at Charlotte Plaza in Charlotte, NC; a store in Elizabeth, NC and a store in Claremont, CA next month.

 

Hang Town Grill (512-476-8696) plans to open restaurants at Great Hills Market and Village at Westlake in Austin, TX next month and during October, respectively.

 

J.C. Penney (214-431-1000) recently opened seven stores in the Baltimore, MD-Washington, D.C. area.  The stores were former Woodward & Lothrop locations that J.C. Penney purchased.  With the opening of the units, the company becomes the number two retailer in the market with 23 stores.  The company also recently opened a  store at Ontario Mills in Ontario, CA.  The Mills Corp., which is developing the 1.7 million sq.ft. project, agreed to allow J.C. Penney to open early.  The rest of the mall is scheduled to open during November.

Lands' End (800-332-0117) recently opened its first "inlet" store in Richfield, MN.  The test store will offer, in addition to traditional discounted merchandise, the option of buying some selected new catalog merchandise on-site.  The company is planning to convert all of its "outlet" stores into inlet stores.

 

Modell's Sporting Goods (718-956-8600) plans to open 15 stores, many former sites of Herman's Sporting Goods, from NJ to VA this year and as many as 10 stores annually during the next five years.

 

Just For Feet, Inc. (205-987-3450) recently opened stores in Tulsa, OK; Las Vegas, NV; Tucson, AZ; Dallas, TX; Chattanooga, TN and Minneapolis, MN.  Three more store openings are planned for the company's second quarter.

Shells Seafood Restaurants, Inc. (813-961-0944) reported that its second quarter net income increased 712% to $479,000 from $59,000 during the second quarter last year.  Revenues increased 33.1% to $10.38 million from $7.798 million with comparable restaurant sales up 16.5% for the quarter.  During the second quarter, the company opened one unit and currently operates 22 seafood restaurants in FL.

 

The Vons Companies, Inc. (818-821-7050) reported that its second quarter net income increased 57% to $22.7 million from $14.5 million last year.  Total sales increased 10.7% to $1.261 billion compared to $1.139 billion last year.  Comparable store sales increased 7.1%.  During the quarter, the company opened one store and closed five to end with 325 supermarkets in CA.

 

Mothers Works, Inc. (215-625-9259) announced that net sales for its third quarter increased 74.9% to $51.6 million from $29.6 million last year.  Comparable store sales increased 14.7% during the quarter.  The company currently operates 459 stores trading as Motherhood Maternity, Episode, Mothers Work, Mimi Maternity, A Pea in The Pod and Maternity Works.

Diedrich Coffee, Inc. (714-438-2282), a 36-unit chain of coffeehouses, plans an initial public offering of 2.2 million shares of stock.  The company plans to use the proceeds to pay down debt and open new stores.

 

Outback Steakhouse, Inc. (813-282-1225) reported that its second quarter net income was $18.236 million compared to $14.396 million last year.  Revenues for the quarter were $236.481 million, a 29% increase over last year's results of $182.723 million.  During the quarter, the company opened 17 Outback Steakhouses and four Carrabba's Italian Grill units.  Currently, the company operates 334 Outback Steakhouses and 29 Carrabba's Italian Grill units in 37 states.

 

Starbucks Corporation (206-447-1575) reported that its third quarter consolidated net sales increased 48% to $176.95 million from $119.174 million.  Retail sales increased 48% to $153.212 million and specialty sales increased 60% to $19.855 million.  Comparable store sales increased 8% for the quarter.  During the quarter, the company opened 73 stores bringing its store total to 899.  For the remainder of the year, the company plans to open 72 stores and open 325 new units during fiscal 1997.

 

Hi-Lo Automotive, Inc. (713-991-6052) reported that its second quarter sales decreased 5.5% to $67.1 million from $71 million last year.  Net income was $200,000 compared to $1.6 million last year and comparable store sales fell 6.6%.  The company currently operates 194 stores in CA, LA and TX.

 

IHOP Corp.
