Who's Opening & Where


Elder-Beerman (937-296-2805) plans to open five small prototype stores annually beginning in its fiscal year 2001. The prototype stores are located in smaller areas where the stores are less likely to face competition from retailers such as Lazarus, Profits, Marshall Field or the May Co. One such store is slated for an opening in late 2000 at West Bend Corporate Center in the Milwaukee, WI metropolitan area.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) plans to open 14 stores during the month of October 2000. Three units are planned for Tulsa, OK, marking the company’s first entry into the market; a store in Flint, MI; three stores on Long Island, NY; two stores in Denver, CO; and one store each in Chicago, IL, Detroit, MI, St. Louis, MO, and Winston/Salem, NC.

 

Borders Books and Music (734-477-1100) plans to open a 20,900 sq.ft. store at Colonial Promenade Beachwood in Athens, GA. The store represents the company’s first unit in the Athens markets and plans a November 2000 opening.

 

Target (612-304-6099) plans to build a 174,500 sq.ft. SuperTarget located on State Highway 135 south of Smith Valley Road in Greenwood, IN. The opening is contingent on the fulfillment of the company’s request for two zoning variances, one for signage and one to reduce the size of employee parking spaces behind the store. Four months ago, the land was rezoned from residential to commercial.

 

Gart Sports (303-861-1122) plans to open 12 stores by the end of 2001 on the strength of its best quarterly earnings since merging with Sportmart more than two years ago.

 

Pei Wei Asian Diner (602-957-8986), a new concept from P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, opened at Casa Paloma shopping center in Chandler, AZ. The new concept is slightly down-market from the company’s P.F. Chang concept, with checks averaging about $10 at Pei Wei as compared to $17-$18 at P.F. Chang’s. Plans call for one other opening located at the intersection of 44th Street and Indian School in Phoenix, AZ. If the two stores are deemed successful, the company plans to test the concept outside of AZ in markets such as Denver, CO; Dallas,TX and/or Las Vegas, NV.

 

Best Buy (612-947-2388) plans to open a 55,000 sq.ft. consumer electronics and appliance store in the former HQ Store at Patrick Henry Mall located on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News, VA. Best Buy purchased the former 100,000 sq.ft. store and has subdivided it to accommodate the smaller store, but also plans to lease the remaining space. Divaris Real Estate is handling the leasing.

 

Sonic Corp. (405-280-7654) opened its fifth drive-in restaurant in the Montgomery, AL area located in the Forest Hills Shopping Center on Atlanta Highway. The project was scheduled for completion earlier this month. The company also plans to open a franchise drive-in restaurant located at the intersection of Central Valley Highway and Jackson Avenue in Shafter, CA.

 

Kmart (248-643-1000) plans to open a Big Kmart store at Elmhurst Crossings Shopping Center, a 340,000 sq.ft. center located at the northeast corner of Route 83 and St. Charles Road in Elmhurst, IL. The unit, which is slated for a Spring 2001 opening, will be located at the center’s second phase of redevelopment. Phase II will also feature a Kohl’s store slated for an opening next month.

 

Babies ‘R’ Us (201-599-7850) purchased a 3.37-acre lot and is currently constructing a store at Mirror Ridge Development located on Route Seven and Potomac View Road in Sterling, VA. Kohl’s anchors the shopping center. An opening is planned for late 2000.

 

Bennigan’s (972-588-5000) plans to open a restaurant on a lot formerly housing Color Tile’s headquarters on Houston Street in Plano, TX. The 97,000 sq.ft. Color Tile building is being demolished and Bennigan’s will build a 7,387 sq.ft. unit on the ground floor of the new building, a "telecom hotel" now called the STS Tower. The company also has plans to open a total of 35 locations nationwide and internationally by year’s end.

 

Grandma’s Restaurant Inc. (218-727-2250) plans to open a smaller neighborhood restaurant at Denfield Center, a 40,000 sq.ft. strip center located on Grand Avenue in West Duluth, MN. The 4,500 sq.ft. restaurant joins two other food establishments at the center--Papa Murphy’s take-and-bake pizza outlet and Zhong Hua, an Oriental cuisine restaurant--and is slated for an opening by the beginning of 2001.

 

La Nova (716-881-3305) is scheduled to open a 2,000 sq.ft. pizza restaurant located on Main Street in Amherst, NY, the company’s second location. The company’s newest location serves as an experiment for future local expansion and as a prototype for a potential regional and national roll-out.
