Who's Opening & Where Beall’s (941-747-2355) plans to open a location in the Eustis Village Shopping Center in Eustis FL in October 2002. Beall’s operates more than 375 department stores in states across the Sun Belt from FL to CA. The opening coincides with the chain’s closing a location in nearby Eustis Square next year. The new store will nearly double the size of Beall’s current Eustis location from 30 000 sq.ft. to 55 000 sq.ft. Fred Meyer (503-797-7733) is proposing a 165 232 sq.ft. store on 15.6 acres in Sandy OR. The grocery chain currently operates more than 2 300 supermarkets price-impact warehouses and multi-department stores in 31 states. Schlotzsky’s Inc. (512-236-3600) plans to open several locations in 2002 including 3 200 sq.ft. freestanding and inline units. Most of the quick-service restaurants will offer coffee bars pastries and computers with free Internet access. The company operates 692 locations in 38 states and Washington DC.Santa Barbara Restaurant Group (805-563-3644) expects to open six La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill locations over the next four years. The company currently operates 49 La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill 25 Timber Lodge Steakhouse and five Green Burrito restaurants. The company also franchises 40 La Salsa Mexican Grill one Timber Lodge Steakhouse and 35 Green Burrito stand alone restaurants and 197 dual-concept restaurants. Ram International (253-588-1788) trading as Ram Restaurant and Brewery plans to open a 12 500 sq.ft. restaurant in Rosemont IL. The company operates 33 locations in WA OR ID WY CO TX IL and IN. Boston Market (302-216-5693) a subsidiary of McDonald’s Corporation plans to open 40 locations by the end of 2002 and another 80 in 2003. The openings will be the company’s first since 1997 and will begin in Framingham MA with a location on the Massachusetts Turnpike. The chain operates 650 homestyle restaurants in 28 states.Kmart (866-562-7848) plans to open a 176 000 sq.ft. Super Kmart at the Tower Mall located at the intersection of I-264 and Victory Boulevard in Portsmouth VA. The store will be joined on the 50-acre site by Lowe’s which expects to open in Spring 2002. Kmart operates 2 100 stores nationwide. Sonic Corp. (405-280-7507) plans to open between 190 and 200 locations in 2002. The drive-in restaurant chain operates in 28 states. The Children’s Place Retail Stores Inc. (201-558-2409) recently opened its 500th store located in the Union Square area of San Francisco CA. The children’s apparel retailer is on track to open 120 stores in fiscal 2001 which will bring its total number of stores to 520 passing the half-way mark of the company’s goal of operating 1 000 locations by the end of 2005.Applebee’s International (913-967-4109) trading as Appleebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar expects to open more than 100 restaurants in 2002 including approximately 25 company-owned restaurants and 80 to 90 franchises. The company currently operates 1 368 restaurants in 49 states. Smoothie King (800-577-4200) opened its second Wichita KS location last month on North Rock Road. The nutritional snack and juice company operates more than 250 franchises in 27 states and expects to open an additional 62 locations. Atlanta Bread Co. (770-432-0933) plans to open a 3 840 sq.ft. location at the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Orangethorpe Avenue in Fullerton CA. The company operates more than 100 restaurants nationwide and plans to open locations throughout North America. Costco (425-313-2923) plans to open a store in Sonterra Park a mixed-use development located on 27 acres of land fronting Loop 1604 in San Antonio TX. Costco which recently opened a location at the intersection of Interstate 10 and UTSA Boulevard in San Antonio is slated to be the anchor tenant at Sonterra Park. Lizard’s Thicket (803-799-5016) opened a location in Greenville SC its first restaurant in upstate SC. The company operates 11 locations in SC and plans to open sites in Spartanburg and Anderson SC. Town Sports International (212-246-6700) plans to open an 18 985 sq.ft. Washington Sports Club in Washington DC’s Westory building. The sports club is expected to open in Spring 2002. The building also is home to a Red Sage restaurant and will be the fifteenth Washington Sports Club in the Washington DC area. Town Sports International operates 106 health clubs under the brands New York Sports Clubs Philadelphia Sports Clubs Boston Sports Clubs and Washington Sports Club. The company also expects to open locations at Chevy Chase Pavilion in Washington DC and The Market Common in Clarendon VA. Best Buy (952-947-2000) plans to open 60 stores annually through 2004 which would give the music and electronics chain 650 locations nationwide. Barnes & Noble Inc. (212-633-3300) expects to open a 30 000 sq.ft. superstore at the Prudential Center located on Boylston Street in Boston MA. The company operates 569 Barnes & Noble and 311 B. Dalton bookstores as well as 990 GameStop video game and software stores. Saks Incorporated (205-940-4000) will open a 101 000 sq.ft. Younkers store in the Oakwood Mall in Eau Claire WI during April 2002 following the closing of its 98 800 sq.ft. location in the nearby London Square Mall. The company will own the Oakwood Mall location which was previously housed Target. Saks Incorporated operates 51 Younkers stores throughout the Midwest 16 of which are located in WI. The stores sell apparel home furnishings and gift items. Krause Furniture Inc. (714-990-3100) expects to reopen as many as 40 locations after being acquired by the Hakakian Group a Los Angeles CA-based investment group. Krause Furniture Inc. ceased operations in October after declaring bankruptcy in July. Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group Inc. (212-838-2061 Ext. 43) will open a site at Easton Town Center located at the intersection of I-270 and Easton Way in Columbus OH. The restaurant will occupy between 7 000 sq.ft. and 10 000 sq.ft. and is slated to open in June 2002. Easton Town Center is anchored by Nordstrom and Lazarus department stores and is home to more than 70 specialty retail restaurant and entertainment venues. Ashley Furniture (608-323-8218) will open its first location in the Midwest during February 2002 near the corner of 21st and Maize Road in Wichita KS. The 24 000 sq.ft. store will include a 20 000 sq.ft. furniture showroom. The company operates 85 stores throughout the U.S. and plans to operate 200 locations by the end of 2002. Sport Chalet Inc. (818-790-2717) expects to open a location in South Coast Plaza a southern CA shopping center by year’s end. The company recently opened a store in Henderson NV its first outside of CA. The sporting goods chain operates 24 locations in CA. Home Depot (770-433-8211) may open a 130 000 sq.ft. store and garden center in Clermont FL. The site is located on the west side of a Kash n’ Karry shopping center. Home Depot operates 1 295 stores in 48 states. |
