Who’s Opening & Where


Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) will open in Cheektowaga, NY. The store, located on Walden Avenue adjacent to the Walden Galleria, will be the second in the Buffalo, NY area. The company has agreed to develop 32 stores over the next six years in Eastern Canada with Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Eastern Canada, Inc. New England Dough, LLC will franchise 16 stores in the next five years in MA, RI and CT. The company will open two locations in Oklahoma City, OK. The first will open May 1 at Interstate 240 and South Western Street, with the second opening in the fall as an outparcel of the Sam’s Club/Wal*Mart being built at Pennsylvania Avenue and Memorial Road. The company plans two stores in Tulsa, OK; one in Norman, OK and four in AR. The company will open its’ fifth Houston, TX-area location with a 2,757 sq.ft. location on the street level of McKinney Place, a new 12-story parking garage with street-level and underground retail space. Other tenants will include Jason’s Deli, Mailboxes Etc., Document Solutions and Payless Shoes.

 

Crate & Barrel (847-272-2888) will open a 40,000 sq.ft. store at Santana Row in San Jose, CA. The 680,000 sq.ft. center will open in spring 2002. St. John Knits have also agreed to tenant the center but store size has not been announced.

 

NEXCOM (757-463-6200) opened a 97,000 sq.ft. store in the North Island area of San Diego, CA and a 50,000 sq.ft. store in Great Lakes, IL. The Navy exchange will open a 200,000 sq.ft. store at Pearl Harbor, HI in 2002.

 

Hooters (770-951-2040) will open on East College Avenue in State College, PA. The unit will open at the site of the former Pennsylvania Pizza.

 

Walgreens (847-940-2500) will open three stores in Columbus, GA. The stores will utilize 14,490 sq.ft. and have drive thru pharmacy lanes. The stores will be located at Veterans Parkway and Whitesville Road, Floyd and Buena Vista Roads and Tate Drive and Wynnton Road. The company is seeking sites in Eugene, OR and Springfield, OR to build freestanding locations. The company plans 500 openings in fiscal 2001 moving toward 6,000 units in 2010. The company will not expand beyond the U.S. but will concentrate on FL, TX, CA, GA and AZ for the next few years.

 

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) will open on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, SC. The company will also open in Martinez, CA. The site is a former Costco Membership store and is expected to open in the fall. The company will not open on Parum Road in Colchester, CT. The 311,641 sq.ft. center that was planned is now in jeopardy after the company and developer Ron Lyman had various contractual disagreements. The company may open a Wal*Mart store and a Sam’s Club at a proposed 441,000 sq.ft. development on a vacant land tract off of Paterson Plank Road in Secaucus, NJ. Starwood Heller Properties is developing the site and construction may begin as soon as Fall 2001. The company will expand its Pueblo, CO location into a Supercenter by adding 80,000 sq.ft. to the existing 120,000 sq.ft. store.

 

Ultimate Electronics, Inc. (303-412-2500) plans eight to 10 new stores for fiscal 2002. The company operates 36 stores under the names Ultimate Electronics, SoundTrack and Audio King in AZ, CO, IA, MN, NV, NM, OK, SD and UT.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) has contacted local officials about opening at Seekonk Square Shopping Plaza in Seekonk, MA. The company is eyeing the 80,000 sq.ft. former Ro-Jack’s Supermarket site. The center is anchored by HomeGoods and TJ Maxx and a Target is planned on the site of the former Lechmere store. The company plans 55 to 60 new stores in 2001, including 34 in the first quarter.

 

Hibbett Sporting Goods (205-942-4292) will open 11 stores in February. The company operates 273 stores in 19 states.

 

Rex Stores Corporation (770-442-8284) plans to open 10 to 15 stores in fiscal 2001. The company opened 30 stores in fiscal 2000, including 12 in the fourth quarter. The electronics chain operates 251 stores in 36 states in predominantly small and medium-sized markets.

 

Safeway (480-894-4100) purchased 11 ABCO stores in AZ. The stores will close for a short time and reopen under the Safeway brand. Of the 11 stores, seven are in Tucson, three in Phoenix and one in Glendale.

 

Movie Gallery, Inc. (334-677-2108) plans 75 new stores in 2001. The company opened 109 units in 2000 and operates 1,020 stores in 31 states.

 

Swarovski Crystal (401-463-3350 ext. 2647) opened at Woodfield Shopping Center in Woodfield, IL. It is the company’s first store in IL and 17th nationwide in major metropolitan areas.

 

99 Cents Only (323-980-8145) plans to open additional stores in Las Vegas, NV and entering Phoenix, AZ. The company plans to grow its store operations by 25% in 2001.

 

Starbucks Coffee (206-447-7954) opened 316 units during the fourth quarter of 2000 and operates 3,817 stores worldwide. The company plans to have 10,000 stores by 2005 bringing annual revenues to $6.6 billion. The company will open a 1,500 sq.ft. store at Mission Plaza in San Fernando, CA that will feature the first drive-thru coffee facility in the Los Angeles area.

 

Guitar Center, Inc. (818-735-8800) opened four stores to bring its total to 83 units. The music stores opened in Bakersfield, CA; Fresno, CA; Oxnard, CA and Cherry Hill, NJ. The company plans 12 to 14 more openings in 2001 and has signed six leases.

Goody’s Family Clothing, Inc. (865-966-2000) plans to open 20 stores and will relocate or remodel 15 units in 2001. The plans are scaled back from expanding its store count by 10%.

 

Whitehall Jewelers, Inc. (312-782-6800) plans to open 35 stores in 2001 with 80% of those in existing markets. The company operates 348 units in 37 states under the brands Whitehall Co. Jewelers, Lundstrom Jewelers and Marks Brothers Jewelers.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) will open four Jacksonville, FL-area locations in the coming 18 months. The company has rendered plans for a 146,639 sq.ft. store at Atlantic Boulevard and Girvin Road in East Arlington, FL and a 145,000 sq.ft. store at the Old St. Augustine Plaza in Mandarin, FL. The home improvement chain is also eyeing spots at 1500 Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach, FL and a 40-acre site along Interstate 295 in Northwest Jacksonville.
