Who's Opening & Where


Bed Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) opened a store in Wilkes Barre, PA. The home accessories retailer plans to open 80 stores during fiscal 2001, and has signed leases on 62 locations. The company opened 70 stores during fiscal 2000 and operates 311 units nationwide.

Jo-Ann Stores Inc. (330-463-6718) opened a 42,000 sq.ft. Jo-Ann etc store at Taylor Square in Reynoldsburg, OH. The company operates 61 Jo-Ann etc stores nationwide and plans to open 12 units during 2001.

Mossfire Grill (904-355-4434) will open its second location at the Underwood Building in Jacksonville, FL. The 10,000 sq.ft. restaurant will have twice the seating and dining area of the original in the Five Points neighborhood. The restaurant is expected to open in February.

Schultz Sav-O Stores Inc. (920-457-4433) will expand its Piggly Wiggly store in Mequon, WI and replace its stores in Sheboygan, WI and Zion, IL with larger supermarkets. The Sheboygan location is scheduled to open in August and the Zion store next year. The company which operates 89 Piggly Wiggly stores in WI and IL will change its operating name to Fresh Brands, Inc.

Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) will open a location in Cranberry, PA. The site is located on Route 19 and is scheduled to open in Mid-August. The unit is the company’s first in the Pittsburgh market and plans call for eight to 10 locations in the region. Sites in West Mifflin and East Liberty are rumored to be under consideration. The company will open four locations in the Milwaukee, WI market. The first to launch, between November and January, will be a 4,200 sq.ft. unit in front of the redeveloped Capitol Court Mall at the intersection of Capitol Drive and North 56th Street. Two more stores are planned for South 108th Street near West National Avenue in West Allis and in the West Blue Mound Road area of Brookfield. The site of the fourth location has not been determined.

Future Shop (604-412-1231) plans to open 34 stores over the coming four years. The Canadian electronics retailer has announced 14 new store locations and 12 relocations that will be opened by the end of fiscal 2003. Included in those plans are three flagship stores in downtown locations in Toronto- Metropolis Complex, Montreal and Vancouver. The company operates 86 stores across Canada.

L.L. Bean (207-865-4100) will open a 16,100 sq.ft. L.L. Bean Factory Outlet store at Prime Outlets at Perryville in Perryville, MD. The store will be the outdoor apparel retailer’s 13th outlet store nationwide.

Santa Barbara Restaurant Group, Inc. (805-563-3644) plans to open five to seven La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill Restaurants during the remainder of fiscal 2001. The company will also open two Timber Lodge Steakhouse restaurants this year. The company has signed a franchise agreement for 10 La Salsa restaurants in northeast Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ with Northern Restaurant Ventures, Inc. The company operates 357 units for its three brands, including the Green Burrito.

Best Buy (952-947-2000) will open a 50,000 sq.ft. store at the Fashion Center in Hackensack, NJ. The store will have entrances on both the Route 17 and Winters Avenue sides but will not connect to the center itself. The company is continuing its four-year 40-store expansion in the New York metropolitan area and plans to open four units in the market by this fall, including one in Manalapan, NJ. The electronics retailer operates over 350 stores nationwide.

Hooters (770-951-2040) will open a location in the Bricktown area of Oklahoma City, OK. The restaurant will occupy the former Monkey Moose Saloon in the Miller Jackson Building located at the intersection of Oklahoma Avenue and Mickey Mantle Drive. The unit will be the company’s third in the Oklahoma City market. The company operates over 280 units nationwide.

Shoe Carnival (812-867-4105) plans to open 17 to 18 stores during 2001. The company expects to open 35 to 40 stores in 2002, and continue a store growth rate of 20% in years to come. The shoe retailer operates 170 stores in the south and midstates.

Venator Group (212-720-3700) will open approximately 1,000 stores over the next several years. The company plans 300 Foot Locker stores in key urban markets in the U.S. and 200 to 300 Champs stores will open throughout North America. The mall-based specialty athletic goods retail chain operates over 3,600 stores worldwide.

BJ’s Wholesale Club (508-651-6100) plans to open four stores in the Orlando, FL market and two in the Sarasota, FL market this fall. The market has been an area of conflict as Costco and BJ’s are moving in on a market once dominated by Sam’s Club.

Williams-Sonoma (415-616-8745) will open 19 Pottery Barn Kids stores during fiscal 2001. The company operates 383 stores nationwide trading as Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids concepts.

Silver Diner Development, Inc. (301-770-4187) will not open a unit at Pentagon Row Shopping Center in Arlington, VA. The company had signed a lease in September, 2000 but terminated the deal in March. The company operates 13 Silver Diner restaurants in MD, VA and NJ.

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) may open a 140,000 sq.ft. store on a 20-acre site located at the intersection of Rocky Ridge Drive and Lead Hill Road in Roseville, CA. The company has scheduled the store opening for summer 2002. Wal*Mart spent $1.4 million to clear 100,000 cubic yards of rocks from the parcel earning the site the nickname, the "rock pile."

Verizon Wireless (925-904-3800) will open seven retail stores and five kiosks in the San Fransisco Bay area, CA. The company opened eight units in the first half of 2001 and operates 29 locations in the market.

Regal Cinemas (865-922-1123) opened a 55,000 sq.ft., 14-screen theater at Downtown Short Pump in Richmond, VA. The 1.4 million sq.ft. development will be anchored by Nordstrom, Hecht’s, Dillard’s and Lord & Taylor’s all of whom are scheduled to open in 2003. Other tenants include Barnes & Noble, TGI Friday’s, Skate Nation American Family Fitness, Sprint PCS, Wolf Camera, Bev’s Ice Cream, McCallister’s Deli and Arby’s.

Tops Markets (800-522-2522) plans to open a store on Jefferson Avenue on the East Side of Buffalo, NY. The company has opened three full-line supermarkets in urban neighborhoods that range in size from 22,000 sq.ft. to 44,000 sq.ft.

Federated Department Stores (323-227-2523) will open a 165,000 sq.ft. Macy’s store at The Promenade regional mall in Temecula, CA. The construction will also include an 80,000 sq.ft. concourse for smaller shops that will connect the store with the rest of the center. The expansion is slated to cost $35 million and is tentatively scheduled to open in fall 2002.

Chicos Fas (941-277-6200) opened 13 stores in the first half of fiscal 2001 and plans 55 total for the year. The women’s apparel retailer plans to open between 55 and 60 stores in fiscal 2002 as well. The company operates 238 stores nationwide.

Menard Inc. (715-876-2207) will open its third Menard’s store in Fort Wayne, IN on the site of the former Seyfert Food potato chip factory. The 26-acre site located at the intersection of Lima and Progress Roads near Interstate 69. The company plans 25 openings in the coming 18 months and operates over 145 locations in the midstates.

Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) will open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at The River at Rancho Mirage in Rancho Mirage, CA. The store is scheduled to open fall 2001 and will be the company’s first store in the Cochella Valley market. The company operates over 340 stores nationwide.
