Regal Cinemas Inc. (865-922-1123) will close at least 20% of the company’s 328 theaters and has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. In conjunction with the company’s chapter 11 filing theaters at the Cloverleaf Mall and Willow Lawn Mall in Richmond VA have been closed. The company plans to exit chapter 11 by January.

United Artists (303-792-3600) will close an eight-screen theater in Clearwater FL. The closure is part of a sale of the company’s smaller theaters nationwide. Competition from a nearby 20-theater AMC megaplex is cited as a reason for the closure in Clearwater. United Artists operates more than 200 theaters nationwide.

Spag’s Supply Inc. (508-799-2570) will close its Springfield MA store next month. Competition from discount big box stores is cited as a reason for the store’s lagging sales and subsequent closure. The company will continue to operate a store in Shrewsbury MA.

Phar-Mor Inc. (330-740-2921) plans to close a Columbus GA store. The company is closing 65 locations as part of a restructuring of operations under chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company will focus continuing operations on 74 remaining stores in its core areas of OH PA NC and VA.

Krause’s Furniture Inc. (714-990-3100) will liquidate its remaining 57 Krause’s Custom Crafted Furniture and Castro Convertibles. The company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July but was unable to turn things around. The company closed 11 under performing showrooms in the past year.

Planet Hollywood (407-363-7827) filed chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company does not plan to close any of its 12 restaurants as part of the reorganization and intends to open locations at Tokyo Disneyland and in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. The company emerged from a previously filed bankruptcy in January 2000.

Albertson’s Inc. (208-395-6200) closed a supermarket in Sacramento CA. The company is closing five stores in northern California as part of a 165-store closing that is expected to improve returns and allow the company to be competitive. The company will continue to operate more than 2 500 stores in 36 states.
