Who's Opening & Where Pacific Coast Restaurants Inc. (503-684-2803) expects to open two Manzana Rotisserie Grill restaurants a 7 800 sq.ft. space in the historic Porter Building in the Pearl District of Portland OR and a 6 500 sq.ft. space overlooking Lakewood Bay in Lake Oswego OR. The restaurants are expected to open by Fall 2002 and Fall 2003. The company also expects to open a 7 200 sq.ft. Newport Bay seafood restaurant in the Lloyd District of Portland OR in Spring 2003 and a Scottsdale Chophouse in Portland’s Embassy Suites Hotel in Fall 2003. Dress Barn (845-369-4500) plans to open about 60 stores converting approximately 15 single-format units to the company’s larger store format. The women’s clothing store chain operates more than 750 locations nationwide. Dress Barn plans to focus on its current markets and enter into new markets where economically justified. The company plans to pursue downtown locations to complement its existing suburban stores. Skechers U.S.A. Inc. (310-318-3100) plans to open between eight and 12 stores next year scaling back from the 28 stores it opened in 2001. The footwear retailer operates more than 50 locations throughout the country.McDonald’s (615-370-9020) is proposing a location at Columbia University’s campus in Morningside Heights NY. The company which operates 76 fast food restaurants in Manhattan would replace Tamarind Seed which would go out of business or relocate if McDonald’s moved into the space. CDI Group Inc. (732-748-8900) plans to open two to five Drug Fair stores annually over the next several years and may open additional Drug Fair storefronts at Cost Cutters locations. The company operates 53 pharmacies in NJ and has opened 28 locations since 1990. Safeway Inc. (925-467-3000) expects to open 80 to 85 supermarkets and remodel an additional 250 next year. The company operates more than 1 650 locations in the U.S. and Canada.Candies Inc. (914-769-8600) plans to open a minimum of 75 outlet stores over the next five years beginning in 2002. The company recently signed an agreement with Designs Inc. granting it exclusive rights to Candies Inc.’s outlets a designer and marketer of young women’s footwear apparel and accessories. Candies Inc. operates 10 company-owned stores while Designs Inc. operates 105 stores trading as Levi’s Outlet and Dockers Outlet. Wal*Mart (800-925-6278) plans to open as many as three Neighborhood Markets in the TN area including a 40 000 sq. ft location under construction in Horn Lake TN. The chain has plans for nine supermarkets in the Memphis TN area within a few years. Wal*Mart expects to open a total of 15 to 20 Neighborhood Markets 50 Wal*Marts and 185 Supercenters in 2002. The company is also proposing a 149 000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart in Plainfield IL; a 185 300 sq.ft. Supercenter in Hood River OR; a 184 435 Supercenter in Citrus Park FL and a location at the Millbrook Marketplace in Algonquin IL. Wal*Mart operates 1 651 discount stores and 1 026 supercenters in addition to 25 neighborhood markets. Golden Corral (919-781-9310) plans to open locations in Erie PA and Fayetteville AR. The buffet-style restaurant operates 500 locations in most areas of the country. The Erie location would be the chain’s first in PA. Kohl’s (262-703-7000) is proposing to open a store in Cottage Grove MN by August. The department store hopes to acquire the nine-acre parcel in June. Kohl’s operates 382 stores in more than half the country. Rotelli Pizza & Pasta (888-238-4326) plans to open about 10 locations annually over the next five years in western PA. The Italian restaurant chain has two locations in FL and one in North Fayette PA. The company is looking for sites of 2 500 sq.ft. to 3 500 sq.ft. Units are expected to open within six months in the Peters Township and Wexford PA markets. Tractor Supply Company (615-366-4600) expects to open 23 to 26 locations in 2002. The farm and ranch store chain operates 320 stores in 28 states and opened 40 locations over the last two years. 99 Cents Only (323-980-8145) expects to open locations at a 23 000 sq.ft. former Alpha Beta store in Fresno CA and at a former 30 000 sq.ft. Bad Boy supermarket in Clovis CA early next year. The discount retailer currently operates 118 stores in CA. Image Arts Etc. (858-453-4200) plans to open 1 000 locations by 2005. The digital photo-arts company has opened 15 stores since its inception in 1999 and has 25 units under construction. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (336-725-2981) is proposing a location in St. Petersburg FL. The donut chain has 196 locations in nationwide and plans to open 40 units this year. Brewzzi (561-392-2739) a division of TGI Friday’s expects to open a microbrewery/restaurant in Boca Raton FL at City Place a downtown shopping center. Barnes & Noble (212-633-3489) plans to open a 32 000 sq.ft. superstore in Torrance CA and a 25 500 sq.ft. store in Council Bluffs IA during October 2002. The company operates approximately 900 stores in 49 states. Long John Silver’s (859-543-6000) a division of Yorkshire Global Restaurants Inc. plans to open between 275 and 300 restaurants by the end of fiscal 2002. The quick-service seafood chain operates over 1 200 units worldwide. Hennes & Mauritz (212-489-8777) operates 25 ladies apparel stores in the U.S. It plans to open 85 stores nationwide by the end of 2003. Stein Mart (800-334-6915) expects to open 15 stores and close one store in Mansfield OH by the end of 2001 bringing its year end total to 253 units. The company plans to add locations in eight existing markets in CA TX IN NV CO and VA. It also will open stores in seven new markets including St. Louis MO and Lessburg VA. Stein Mart management previously planned to open about 30 units in 2002 of which the company has commitments on about half of the locations.Boscov’s (610-779-2000) plans to open a store in the Ocean County Mall in Dover Township NJ. The 171 000 sq.ft. department store expects to open in May 2002. Boscov’s currently operates 34 stores in PA NJ DE MD and NY. Save-A-Lot (314-592-9100) is proposing a location in Racine WI. The grocery chain operates more than 1 000 stores in 36 states. The average Save-A-Lot occupies 12 000 sq.ft. Cost Plus (510-893-7300) is planning to add 25 stores to its operation in 2003. The home furnishings retailer currently operates 145 stores in 19 states under the names World Market Cost Plus World Market and Cost Plus Import. Hecht’s (202-737-7500) a division of the May Co. plans to open a 120 000 sq.ft. Furniture Galleries store at Ballston Common Mall in Arlington VA in Fall 2002. The department store will sell furniture and sleep products on the second and third floors and will bring in other retailers to fill out the first floor. Hecht’s operates 58 stores in 15 markets including Baltimore MD Richmond VA Nashville TN and Washington DC. |
