 Who's Opening & Where


Target (612-304-6073) will open a 160 000 sq.ft. store on the site of the former Montgomery Ward building at Lakewood Center Mall in Lakewood CA. The store is scheduled to open in fall 2002 at the 2.05 million sq.ft. center owned and managed by The Macerich Company.

Sinvin Realty (212-604-9000) brokered the lease for Obzee a Korean fashion company to open its first store in the United States in New York City. The high-fashion boutique will occupy 3 200 sq.ft. located on Greene Street in the SoHo neighborhood.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill (813-282-1225) will open a restaurant located on Southwest 34th Street in Gainesville FL. The unit will anchor a new development situated on 10 acres at the intersection of 34th Street and Archer Road. Bosshardt Realty Services is leasing the project.

Horrocks Market (517-323-3782) will open a store at the former Plumb’s Grocery Store site in Kentwood MI. The site is located at the intersection of 44th Street and Breton Avenue. The three-unit chain specializing in seasonal garden items and fresh fruits and vegetables also operates in Lansing and Battle Creek MI.

Publix Supermarkets (863-688-1188) will open a 44 216 sq.ft. store at the former Winn-Dixie site at LaBelle Plaza in Clearwater FL. The supermarket is scheduled to open by November 2002 at the center located at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Belleair Road. The company operates over 600 units throughout FL AL GA and SC.

The Steak n Shake Company (317-633-4100) will open 20 units in fiscal 2002. The company is currently buying back outstanding stock and operates 387 restaurants in 17 states. The fiscal 2002 openings will include the chain’s entry into TX with four units in the Dallas market.

Shoe Carnival (812-867-4105) will open five stores in the second half of 2001. The company opened 13 stores in the first half of the year including two stores in the Toledo OH market; two in the Chicago IL market; and one each in the Waco TX Joplin MO Corpus Christi TX Wichita KS St. Louis MO and Lubbock TX markets. The company operates 178 stores in the southern midwest and southeastern states.

Stein Mart (904-346-1500) will open a 32 000 sq.ft. store at Mission Grove Plaza in Riverside CA. The center is located at the intersection of Alessandro Boulevard and Trautwein Road and will be the chain’s fifth location in the Inland area. The department store chain operates 240 stores nationwide.

99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall (831-459-9994) will open a franchised location in San Jose CA. The site is located next to a new Gordon Biersch Brewery and near blues and comedy clubs. The restaurant and bar plans to sell eight franchises throughout CA. The original location is located in Santa Cruz CA and was started by former Domino’s Pizza franchisees.

The Wet Seal Inc. (949-699-4059) will open up to 100 stores for its Arden B. concept in the coming 18 months. The company operates 83 units for the concept as well as 368 Wet Seal locations 89 Contempo Casual stores and 18 Zutopia units.

Urban Outfitters Inc. (215-665-0060) plans four or five more openings for the remainder of the fiscal year. The company opened five Urban Outfitters locations in the first half of the year including a store at the intersection of 14th Street and Sixth Avenue in New York. The company also opened two Anthropologie stores in the last six months. The company operates 47 Urban Outfitter stores and 28 units for the Anthropologie concept.

The City of Baltimore MD (410-396-3835) office of Mayor Martin O’Malley has appointed a team of aides to confer with supermarket chains to open stores within the city limits. The committee has contacted Giant Safeway and Save-A-Lot about sites.

The Sharper Image Corporation (415-445-6226) will open 12 stores for the fiscal year. The specialty electronics retailer opened three stores in the second quarter at Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo CA; at Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station NY and at Lakeside Mall in Metairie LA.

Abercrombie & Fitch Company (614-283-6500) will open 23 stores in the third quarter of 2001. The company plans to open 138 units for the year. The company operates over 200 locations for the concept.

The Children’s Place (201-558-2400) plans 33 more openings in the remainder of the fiscal year. The company has opened 81 units in the past six months. The apparel company operates 481 stores nationwide.

Kohl’s Department Stores (262-703-7000) plans to open 28 stores in the second half of 2001. Four stores opened in August two in the El Paso TX market and two in the Chicago IL market. The company plans 24 openings next month: four stores in the Oklahoma City OK market three stores in the Austin TX and Atlanta GA markets two stores each in Louisville KY and Baltimore MD markets and one store each in Dallas TX; Kansas City MO; Philadelphia PA; Minneapolis MN; Howell NJ; Midland MI; Greenville SC; Coralville IA; Cedar Falls IA and Bloomington IN. The department store chain operates 354 stores nationwide.

O’Charley’s Inc. (615-256-8500) will open a 7 993 sq.ft. Stoney River Legendary Steaks location on the site of the former Carmike Galleria 10 Cinemas in Franklin TN. The dinner-only steakhouse will be the fourth location for the concept and another is planned for suburban Chicago IL by the end of the year. O’Charley’s Inc. plans 15 openings for the concept over the next five years. CBL & Associates is redeveloping the former theater site that will also include the first Buca di Beppo Restaurant in TN and 14 000 sq.ft. of retail space.

Trader Joe’s (781-433-0234) opened a 13 000 sq.ft. store at Town & Country Village shopping center in Sacramento CA. The store replaces a smaller unit next door. The company plans to open a store located a block east of Alhambra Avenue in East Sacramento CA but development has been slowed by lawsuits over the changes in traffic patterns. The company operates 156 specialty food stores nationwide.

Culver’s Frozen Custard (608-356-5938) plans to open a location at the intersection of Old Hicks and Rand Roads in Palatine IL. The 133-unit restaurant chain is targeting the Chicago IL and Minneapolis MN markets for expansion in 2002.
