Who's Opening & Where


IKEA North America Service, Inc. (610-834-0180) is planning to open a store on a 27.4 acre site at the Hacienda Drive Interchange and Interstate 580 in Dublin, CA. The store would be located across from the Hacienda Crossings shopping center. The home furnishing chain operates 160 locations worldwide, including a 274,000 sq.ft. site in Emeryville, CA.

Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) will open a Lowe’s Home Improvement Center at the intersection of Route 17 and Route 615 in Gloucester, VA during Spring 2003. The company operates 44 stores in VA. The company also will open a location in Birmingham, AL at a site formerly occupied by Wal*Mart at Brook Highland Plaza on U.S. 280. The company already has started construction on stores in downtown Bessemer, AL off Interstate 20/59 and in Gadsden, AL off Interstate 759 at George Wallace Drive. Those three stores will be joined by four others once sites are secured. Lowe’s plans to open 123 stores this year. The stores typically are 121,000 sq.ft. with a lawn and garden center averaging an additional 30,000 sq.ft. The company also plans to open a 150,000 sq.ft. home improvement center on a 16-acre parcel in Austin, TX. The property previously was occupied by Hart Graphics. The store is expected to open by early 2003. The company operates more than 740 home improvement stores in 42 states.

The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open a store at the Southbridge Center in Charleston, WV. Area retailers include Staples and Lowe’s. Area competition includes Pile Hardware.

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-391-8400) is opening an 80,000 sq.ft. location in Austin, TX. The company plans to open 400 stores in urban locations by 2010. Whole Foods plans to open or acquire 15 to 20 stores this year.

Drexel Heritage (405-947-7433) is planning to open five stores over the next three years in the Chicago, IL area. The company also will open a 15,000 sq.ft. furniture store in Oakbrook, IL later this year. In addition to the five IL stores, Drexel Heritage will open nine other locations. The company also plans to open 12 stores in 2003.

Bed Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) opened 13 stores during the fiscal first quarter. Since the beginning of the fiscal second quarter, the company opened six stores, brining the total operating stores to 415 in 44 states and Puerto Rico. The company also plans to open 88 stores in both new and existing markets during fiscal 2002, which ends on March 1, 2003.

Safeway, Inc. (925-467-3000) will open as many as 10 supermarkets in CO this year. The expansion comes at a time when the company is closing 14 stores, primarily in IL and TX.

CVS Corp. (401-765-1500) plans to open a store at the intersection of State Highway 6 and First Colony Boulevard in Sugar Land, TX by December 2002. The company currently operates 12 stores in TX and 4,200 stores nationwide.

Eckerd Corp. (800-325-3737) is opening a 13,282 sq.ft. store in Tega Cay, SC in mid-November. The company will close its smaller store once the new site opens.

Gordman’s (402-331-4200) is moving from its present location at 7500 East Kellogg in Wichita, KS to 21st Street and Rock Road in October. The East Kellogg store will close in early October. The company operates 40 stores in nine Midwestern states. The new store will be 50,000 sq.ft. and feature a children’s theater and a sports-themed seating area.

Family Dollar Stores, Inc. (704-847-6961) opened 135 stores during the third quarter, which ended early last month. The openings included the first stores in UT. The company now operates stores in 40 states and plans to open 525 stores during the current fiscal year.

Dick’s Sporting Goods (412-787-1330) is opening a 50,000 sq.ft store at Towne West Square in Wichita, KS. Construction is expected to begin this Fall, with the opening slated for April 2003. The store will be located at the site of a former Shopko space at 21st and Rock Road. The company is also planning to open a store in east Wichita. The company has six stores in the Kansas City, KS area and one in Topeka, KS. The company is also opening 15 to 20 stores a year throughout the Mid-Atlantic, the Midwest and the central northeast and plans to have 140 stores in 25 states by the end of the year.

Calloway’s Nusery, Inc. (817-222-1122) plans to open three stores in San Antonio, TX. The company also is negotiating to lease additional stores. The company operates 16 stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX Metroplex and three Cornelius stores in Houston, TX.

Pottery Barn Kids, Inc. (415-421-7900) is opening an 8,414 sq.ft. store at the 960,000 sq.ft. Oxmoor Center in Louisville KY at a site formerly occupied by Rhodes. It will be the company’s first store in KY. The company operates 26 stores in North America and expects to open 25 more by the end of the year.

Aeropostale (212-695-2213) opened a 4,000 sq.ft. store at Central Mall in Fort Smith, AK. It is the company’s second AK store. The company also plans to open 80 stores in the 2002 fiscal year and possibly expand to 900 locations in the near future.

Best Buy Co. (952-947-2000) plans to open stores in West El Paso, TX and Las Cruces, NM. The 45,000 sq.ft. El Paso store will be located across the street from the Sunland Park Mall and is expected to open this winter. The 30,000 sq.ft. Las Cruces store will be located at 2300 Lohman near Mesilla Valley Mall. The company also plans to open a 32,504 sq.ft. store at the 579,244 sq.ft. Magnolia Mall in Florence, SC. The store will occupy space previously leased by Rose’s Department Store. The company is opening 60 stores a year with a goal of 700 new locations by 2004.

Office Depot, Inc. (888-463-3768) plans to move its store on Marks Church Road in Augusta, GA to a new location near the Augusta Exchange shopping center. The 20,500 sq.ft. store is under construction next to a Best Buy on Walton Way Extension. The company also plans to open 40 locations this year.

Petco (858-453-7845) plans to open a 15,280 sq.ft. store on Bear Valley Road in Victorville, CA in early August. The store will be located in the Vons shopping center and will occupy the space of a former Ross ‘Dress for Less’. The company plans to open about 60 stores annually for the next three to five years. Petco currently operates 561 stores in 42 states and Washington, DC.

Sofa Express (614-836-4800) is opening three stores in the Akron, OH area. The company currently has 20 locations with 17 in OH, two in Indianpolis, IN and one in Florence, KY. The Akron stores will be located at 1739 Brittain road near Chapel Hill Mall, at The Strip in Jackson Township and 3737 West Market Street in the Shops of Fairlawn.

Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) and Panera Bread Co. (314-633-7100) are opening stores at the Flemington Marketplace in Raritan Township, NJ during Spring 2003. The 22,000 sq.ft. Borders will anchor the center and take over space formerly occupied by a Grand Union supermarket. The store will co-anchor with Burlington Coat Factory. Borders operates 370 stores nationwide, including 11 in NJ. The Panera Bread store will occupy about 4,500 sq.ft. and will open into Borders. Panera Bread operates more than 260 stores, including 13 in NJ.
