Closings

Kmart Corp. (248-643-1000) is closing 284 underperforming stores as part of its initial Chapter 11 financial objectives review. The stores to be closed include 271 Kmart stores and 12 Kmart Supercenter locations in 40 states and one Kmart location in Puerto Rico. The closure is expected to enhance the company’s operational and financial performance. The company operates more than 2,100 Kmart and Kmart Supercenter stores nationwide.

Carmike Cinemas, Inc. (706-576-3400) closed two cinemas in UT. The company’s Cottonwood Mall 4 theater in Salt Lake County and Cache Valley 3 theater in Logan closed last month. The company, which filed for bankruptcy in January 1999, operates four locations in UT and more than 300 theaters in 35 states. The company also closed the Carmike 7 theater at the Kmart Plaza shopping center in Durham, NC.

Albertson’s Inc. (208-385-6200) closed four supermarkets at the following locations in TN: 5527 Edmonton Pike and 2381 Murfreesboro Pike in Nashville, 1100 Gallatin Pike South in Madison and 710 Memorial Boulevard in Murfreesboro. The closings are part of the company’s cost-cutting plan to close 165 underperforming stores that was initiated last Summer. The company operates about 2,500 stores in the U.S.

Milton D. Myer Co. (412-279-9151), parent company of Family Toy, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month. Family Toy, which operates 24 stores in five states, recently rejected four leases in Pittsburgh and Downingtown, PA and Ashtabula and Columbus, OH.

Spiegel Inc. (708-986-8800) is closing 40 Eddie Bauer stores as part of the company’s reorganization. The company operates more than 530 Eddie Bauer retail and outlet stores in the U.S. and Canada.

Walt Disney Co. (818-560-1000) closed a Disney Store location at the Lafayette Square Mall in Indianapolis, IN last month. The closure is part of the company’s plan to close an about 50 Disney Stores during 2002. The company currently operates 480 locations. Following the closures, 300 to 400 Disney Stores are expected to operate in North America.

B&B Corporate Holdings, Inc. (813-621-6411) is closing U-Save Supermarket locations on West Waters Avenue in Tampa, FL and in Gibsonton, FL. The company operates about 15 stores in FL.
