Who's Opening & Where


Loaf N’ Jug Mini Mart (719-948-3071) plans to open four to five stores a year. Loaf N’ Jug Mini Mart, a division of The Kroger Co., operates convenience store locations in CO, MO, ND, NE, NM, SD and WY.

Magnolia Hi-Fi (253-372-4434) plans to open six locations this year. Three of the openings will be in Palo Alto, Colma and Santa Rosa, CA. The electronics retailer, which is a division of Best Buy Co., operates 13 locations.

BJ’s Wholesale Club (508-651-7400) is opening a location in the Newnan Crossing West shopping center in Newnan, GA this year. The 115,396 sq.ft. store will be built on 11.8 acres on the proposed Georgia Highway 34 bypass extension.

Cost Plus, Inc. (510-893-7300) plans to open 26 stores this year. The retailer of casual home living and entertaining products operates 150 stores in 19 states.

The Bombay Company, Inc. (817-347-8200) plans to open 20 to 25 stores this year. In addition, the company will convert four to six smaller stores to the larger 3,500 sq.ft. to 4,500 sq.ft. format and close about seven stores with expiring leases. The retailer of home accessories, wall decor and furniture operates 419 stores in the U.S. and internationally.

Nordstrom, Inc. (206-303-3262) plans to open eight full-line stores and four Nordstrom Rack stores during fiscal 2002, which ends in January 2003. The openings will increase the company’s gross square footage by 8%. The company operates 131 stores in 25 states.

Aaron Rents, Inc. (404-231-0011) plans to open 10 company-operated stores and 20 franchised stores during 2002. The company, which rents and sells residential and office furniture, accessories, consumer electronics and household appliances, operates more than 650 company-owned and franchised stores in the U.S.

Borders Books and Music (734-477-1265) will open a 27,000 sq.ft. store at Santana Row in San Jose, CA. The retailer of books, music and video, information and entertainment items operates 360 stores in the U.S.

CBRL Group Inc. (615-444-5533) plans to open six Cracker Barrel Old Country Store locations during the third and fourth quarters of fiscal 2002, which ends in August. One of the planned openings will be at Hamilton Marketplace in Hamilton, NJ. The center is expected to open during November. The company operates 447 restaurant and gift shop locations in 41 states.

Waffle House (770-729-5700) is proposing a location on Route 512 in Hanover Township, PA. The 24-hour, short-order restaurant chain operates 1,300 units in 26 states. About 50% of the units are franchised and 50% are company-owned and operated. The company’s PA locations include Lancaster, Carlisle and Harrisburg.

Binney & Smith (610-253-6272), the manufacturer of Crayola crayons, is opening its first crayon-themed store at the Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover, MD. The 20,000 sq.ft. interactive studio and store will open this Summer.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-726-8917) plans to open 59 stores and 10 to 15 small-format doughnut and coffee shops during fiscal 2003, which ends in February 2003. In addition, a company franchisee, KKNY LLC, is planning to open a location on Route 22 in Green Brook, NJ within a year. The store will be the first in north and central NJ. KKNY LLC plans to open four stores in northern NJ next year and 20 stores in the area during the next five years. More than 218 Krispy Kreme locations operate in 33 states.

Famous Daves, Inc. (952-294-1300) is opening a location in Benson Park in Omaha, NE during May or June. The 5,000 sq.ft. restaurant, which will have outside dining and a covered patio, is being opened through a franchisee.

City Furniture (954-597-2200) is opening a 55,454 sq.ft. location at 3501 North Federal Highway in Oakland Park, FL. The store will open during September and replace the company’s showroom at 3831 North Federal Highway. The company operates 15 stores.

Janovic/Plaza, Inc. (800-772-4381) opened a 16,500 sq.ft. location at 136 Church Street in New York, NY this month. The retailer of home decorating products and residential, commercial and industrial coatings, operates 18 locations in the New York area.

It’s a Grind Inc. (562-594-5600) plans to open six coffee shops in the Las Vegas, NV area by the end of this year. New stores in NV will include locations at the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Rampart Road, the intersection of Rainbow Boulevard and Flamingo Road and a location on Anthem Village Drive. The company currently operates 80 stores and plans to operate 200 stores within the next five years.

Club Libby Lu (773-638-5466) is opening a location at the Fox Valley Center in Aurora, IL next month. The retailer of apparel and accessories for girls 12 years old and younger operates four locations; three in IL and one in WI.

Federated Department Stores, Inc. (212-704-3300) plans to open 14 stores this year. New locations will include two Macy’s East stores in Orlando, FL and Jersey City, NJ; four Macy’s West stores in Scottsdale, AZ and Capitola, Temecula and Westminster, CA; three Bloomingdale’s stores in Willowbrook and Bridgewater, NJ and Orlando, FL; two Bloomingdale’s home stores in Las Vegas, NV and Chicago, IL; one Rich’s store in Columbus, GA; one Bon Marche store in Yakima, WA and one Burdines furniture gallery in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The company operates more than 450 stores in 34 states.

Brinker International, Inc. (972-980-9917) is opening a Romano’s Macaroni Grill location at the Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg, FL by late June or early July. The company operates 1,100 restaurants, 180 of which are Romano’s Macaroni Grill locations.

Petco Animal Supplies, Inc. (858-453-7845) plans to open 55 to 60 stores this year and for the next several years. In addition, the company plans to close 10 underperforming outlets. The retailer of pet supplies operates 561 stores in 41 states.

Logli (314-994-9900) plans to open a 63,000 sq.ft. supermarket at the Creston Park Mall in Janesville, WI. The supermarket will be located at the former site of Dunham’s Sports. The company, a division of Schnucks Markets, Inc., operates five locations.

Lowe’s Companies Inc. (336-658-4000) plans to open a 174,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Iowa Highway 21 and San Marnan Drive in Waterloo, IA. In addition, the company is opening a location in Hamilton, NJ at Hamilton Marketplace, which is expected to open during November. The site is located next to a Sam’s Club. The company operates more than 740 home improvement stores in 42 states.

The May Department Stores Co. (314-342-6300) is opening a Foley’s location at the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, TX during October.

Barneys New York, Inc. (212-450-8300) is opening a store at 116 Wooster Street, the former location of Prada Sport. The location will be the company’s second co-op store and will only sell women’s clothing. The retailer of upscale apparel, shoes, accessories and home furnishings for men, women and children plans to open another co-op store during the Fall and more stores through 2003. In addition, this Spring the company is opening an 8,000 sq.ft. store devoted to beauty products called The Foundation. The company operates eight full-price stores and 12 outlets.
