Who's Opening & Where


Barnes & Noble (212-633-3489) plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store in Oceanside, CA. The store, which is expected to open in April 2003, will be located in El Camino Shopping Center at the intersection of Highway 78 and El Camino Real. The company also plans to open a 23,000 sq.ft. store in Woodmere, OH during June 2004. The store will be located at the Eton Collection shopping center on Chagrin Boulevard.

Beall’s, Inc. (800-250-9206) plans to open stores throughout the south and CA, including eight departments stores and at least 80 bargain outlets.

Best Buy Co., Inc. (952-947-2000) plans to open six stores at former Service Merchandise locations in Birmingham, AL; Boynton Beach, FL; Patchogue, NY; Pineville, NC; Saugus, MA and South Bend, IN. All the stores will occupy a space of 45,000 sq.ft., with the exception of the MA store, which will occupy a space of 30,000 sq.ft.

Valta, Inc. (630-844-0590) plans to open a 2,800 sq.ft. Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits restaurant at the intersection of East New York and Loucks streets in Aurora, IL. The restaurant is expected to open during 2004.

OfficeMax (216-921-6900) plans to open 55 stores nationwide and six superstores in Puerto Rico during the next two years. The company currently operates eight stores throughout the island. OfficeMax also acquired BizMart, which gives the company more than 260 stores nationwide.

Del Taco (949-462-9300) plans to open a restaurant in El Paso, TX. The company also plans to open five more restaurants in El Paso and Las Cruces, TX.

Cingular (866-246-4852) plans to open 200 retail stores in the metro New York, NY area. The stores will include a café-style area with a "live bar" that lets customers try products before they purchase them.

Sears Canada, Inc. (416-362-1711) is planning to open separate Martha Stewart specialty stores. The freestanding stores would provide Martha Stewart Everyday goods such as bed and bath products, housewares and gardening products. Expansion plans are expected to begin next summer.

Whistler Investments (888-410-1994) acquired Caffer Artigiano, an Italian café concept with two operating locations in Vancouver, Canada. The company plans to franchise up to 100 stores within one year and an additional 700 stores within five years.

Shoe Carnival, Inc. (812-867-6471) plans to open 25 stores by the end of the year and 40 stores in 2003. The company recently opened stores in Rock Hill, SC; Elyria, OH; Cuyahoga Falls, OH; Medina, OH; Portage, MI; McAllen, TX; Harvey, LA; Casselberry, FL and Mishawaka, IN.

Home Depot (770-433-8211) is considering opening a 20-acre site in Newark, OH at the former Valley Drive-In site south of Deo Drive. The company operates 1,300 stores nationwide, in Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico. The company also is planning to open one of its Expo Design Center stores in Beaverton, OR. The company is looking to open the store in the former HomeBase location north of Southwest Canyon Road on 110th Avenue. The store would occupy between 60,000 sq.ft. to 80,000 sq.ft.

CEC Entertainment, Inc. (972-258-8507) is planning to open 32 to 36 restaurants by the end of the year. The company recently opened a 6,100 sq.ft. location in Waco, TX. During the first half of the year, the company opened 13 restaurants and acquired three restaurants from a franchisee.

Safeway, Inc. (925-467-3000) has pushed back the opening date for its third Corvallis, NY store by several months. The company also plans to open a second store in Albany, NY. The Corvallis store will occupy a space of 48,000 sq.ft. and will be located next to Big Kmart at 400 N.E. Circle. The store is expected to open in early 2003.
