Who's Opening & Where The May Department Stores, Inc. (314-342-6300) is planning to open a 140,000 sq.ft. Filene’s department store at the Dartmouth Mall, a 620,000 sq.ft. mall located near Interstate 195 in Dartmouth, MA. Filene’s is slated for a Fall 2004 opening. The company also is planning to open a Filene’s Basement store at the Shoppes at Buckland Hills in St. Louis, MO. The space is currently occupied by Lord & Taylor. The company will begin remodeling the site to house the Filene’s location, which should be completed during 2004. Once completed, the store will occupy a space of 250,000 sq.ft. The May Department Stores, Inc. operates 448 department stores under the following tradenames: Lord & Taylor, Famous-Barr, Filene’s, Foley’s, Hecht’s, Kaufmann’s, L.S. Ayres, Meier & Frank, Robinsons-May, Strawbridge’s and The Jones Stores, as well as 193 David’s Bridal stores, 331 After Hours Formalwear stores and 10 Priscilla of Boston stores. The first store at the intersection of Pontiac and Clinton Streets is scheduled to open early next year. It will be followed by a second restaurant in Chapel Ridge, IN at the intersection of Maysville Road and Interstate 469. Three other Popeyes locations are also planned throughout the area. The company currently operates 1,770 Popeyes locations throughout 42 states.
DeBrand Fine Chocolates (800-482-4373) opened a 400 sq.ft. store inside the main terminal of Fort Wayne International Airport in Fort Wayne, IN. The company currently operates five stores, which offer gourmet chocolates and truffles, individually and in gift boxes. The company also offers a line of ice cream in half-pint containers. The company operates three stores in Fort Wayne and one in Indianapolis.
Family Dollar Stores (704-847-6961) currently operates 5,051 stores throughout 43 states and plans to open another 500 locations during its current fiscal year.
Panera Bread (314-633-7100) is planning to open at least 35 locations in the Philadelphia, PA area during the coming five years. Panera has been opening restaurants at the rate of almost 100 units annually and the company is currently operating 540 locations throughout 33 states. The company also is planning to open 14 restaurants throughout the Charlotte, NC area. The first two stores will open this month in Concord and Rock Hill. Construction has started on a restaurant off State Highway 51 near the Target store in Matthews and negotiations are under way for sites on U.S. 521 in Ballantyne and in South Park. In addition, Panera is seeking sites in the Elizabeth neighborhood, the University City area and Gastonia.
Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is planning to open an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar at 4100 Ridgerock Road in Rio Rancho, NM. The space was formerly occupied by Seferino’s New Mexican Restaurant. The 7,800 sq.ft. restaurant has an additional 1,300 sq.ft. of space available. The company currently operates eight restaurants in Albuquerque and one in Santa Fe. Overall, the company operates 1,496 restaurants throughout 49 states and nine foreign countries.
Old Navy (800-653-6289) is planning to open a 15,000 sq.ft. store at the Centerpointe Mall located at the intersection of 28th Street and East Beltline Avenue in Grand Rapids, MI. Opening is slated for June 2004. The company currently operates approximately 800 locations nationwide, including two locations in the metropolitan Grand Rapids area. The store will be in the Linens ‘n Things wing of the mall, across from T.J. Maxx.
Bi-Mart Corp. (541-344-0681) is planning to open a store in Havre, MT. The Havre store is the first of about eight outlets that the company wants to open throughout MT during the coming two years. The company also is looking throughout ID for possible store locations. Bi-Mart operates small versions of big-box discount stores with frequently purchased household items, hardware and clothing. The stores also have pharmacies. The eastward expansion will likely require the company to open a second distribution center in either northern ID or MT. The company also operates Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises, which runs 62 Saks Fifth Avenue stores and 53 Off 5th stores.
Brinker International, Inc. (972-980-9917) is planning to open a 4,215 sq.ft. Chili’s Grill & Bar at the intersection of Ogden Road and Townsend Avenue in Montrose, CO. The company also is planning to open a location at Merrick Park in Coral Gables, FL. The lease is for 20 years with eight, 10-year options. The stores would be located six miles apart. The company currently operates 147 stores throughout 27 states, including 91 full-line stores, 49 Nordstrom Rack stores, five Facconable boutiques, one freestanding shoe store and one clearance store. The company also operates 31 international Facconable boutiques, primarily in Europe.

Urban Outfitters, Inc. (215-564-2313) is planning to open an Anthropologie store at the Galleria in the Pittsburgh, PA area. The store, which offers a merchandise mix that combines upscale women’s fashions with housewares, is slated to open during April 2004. The store will occupy a 10,000 sq.ft. site next to a movie theater. The company also operates stores under the name Urban Outfitters, which caters to clientele in their 20s. Anthropologie caters to women aged 30 to 45.
Pot Belly Sandwich Works (312-951-0600) is planning to open a location at the Shoppes at Arbor Lake in Maple Grove, MN.
