Who's Opening & Where


U.S. Factory Outlets, Inc. (212-563-3650) opened a 50,000 sq.ft. store at a former Kmart location at the Hanover Mall Shopping Center in Hanover Township, PA. Overall, the company is planning to open five stores totaling 300,000 sq.ft. this year. Other locations include Hamilton, OH; Wilmington, DE; McMinnville, TN and Chambersburg, PA.

The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open a store at the intersection of New Salem Road and Matthew Drive in Uniontown, PA. The 95,000 sq.ft. store will include an 18,700 sq.ft. garden center. Opening is slated for December. The company currently operates 1,500 stores across North America, including 49 throughout PA. In addition to all 50 states, the company operates locations in Washington, DC, eight Canadian provinces and Mexico.

Cosi, Inc. (212-739-7157) opened six restaurants this year. The company currently operates 94 fast casual restaurants throughout 11 states and Washington, DC.

Giant Eagle, Inc. (412-963-6200) opened two GetGo from Giant Eagle convenience stores throughout OH. The venture began last Summer when Giant Eagle entered into a partnership with Guttman Enterprises, which operates 27 Crossroads convenience stores. During the coming months, the Crossroads sites will become GetGo locations. In addition, new stand-alone stores will be built on 4,500 sq.ft. compared to the smaller 600 sq.ft. to 1,800 sq.ft. versions that opened in Giant Eagle parking lots. Gas stations that already have been built at 13 Giant Eagles will be remodeled and renamed GetGos.

Main Street & Main, Inc. (602-852-9000) is planning to open three Bamboo Club restaurants, including locations at Aventura Mall in Miami, FL and in Novi, MI, in addition to a T.G.I. Friday’s location at the Desert Ridge Mall in Phoenix, AZ. The company also is considering opening additional Bamboo Club locations depending on the economy and performance of the existing sites.

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-391-8400) expects weighted average square footage growth of 12% for the year, including expansions of existing stores. The company expects to open two stores in the third quarter and two stores in the fourth quarter, one of which will be a relocation of an existing store. The company recently signed leases for five stores in Princeton, NJ; Glendale, CA; Charleston, SC; White Plains, NY; and Cleveland, OH. The company currently has 27 stores in development averaging 43,000 sq.ft.

Grill Concepts, Inc. (310-820-5559) is planning to open a restaurant in the Washington, DC area and is currently in negotiations for another restaurant later this year in the Western U.S. The company owns and manages upscale casual and fine dining, full-service restaurants under two core brand names: The Grill on the Alley and Daily Grill. The company currently operates 21 restaurants, including The Grill on the Alley-branded restaurants in Beverly Hills, Hollywood and San Jose, CA and Chicago, IL, as well as Daily Grill restaurants in southern and northern CA, the Washington, DC area, Houston, TX and Skokie, IL.

Tumbleweed, Inc. (502-893-0323) is planning to open as many as two restaurants this year. The company currently operates 57 Tumbleweed restaurants, including 31 throughout IN, KY and OH and 20 franchised restaurants throughout IL, IN, KY and WI. The company also operates six licensed restaurants located in Germany, Jordan, Egypt, England and Turkey.

BUCA, Inc. (612-288-2382) opened nine restaurants in the following locations: Cool Springs, TN; Littleton, CO; Exton, PA; Jacksonville, FL; Valencia, CA; Chicago, IL; Pineville, NC; Salt Lake City, UT and Cherry Hill, NJ. The company plans to open five more locations this year. The company currently operates 100 restaurants under the names Buca di Beppo and Vinny T’s throughout 27 states and Washington, DC.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Inc. (888-525-2462) opened 27 stores this year. The company currently operates 230 stores nationwide. The company also expects franchisees to open 25 to 30 stores.

Guitar Center, Inc. (818-735-8800) opened three large format stores in Scottsdale, AZ; Cerritos, CA and Warwick, RI, as well as one small format store in Gary, IN. The company plans to open to open one additional large format store and two small format stores in the second quarter of 2003. In addition, the company plans to open two to four American Music stores this year.

O’Charley’s, Inc. (615-256-8500) opened three Ninety Nine restaurants and is planning to open two restaurants in the second quarter, as well as a total of approximately 10 restaurants this year. The company currently operates 195 O’Charley’s restaurants throughout 16 states in the Southeast and Midwest. O’Charley’s also operates Ninety Nine restaurants at 80 locations throughout CT, MA, ME, NH, RI and VT. The company also operates six Stoney River Legendary Steaks restaurants throughout GA, IL, KY and TN.

Beall’s, Inc. (800-250-9206) is planning to expand its stores and move into former Home Depot, Kmart and Wal*Mart locations throughout FL. The company will renovate at least 10 locations. The chain’s retail space will increase by one-fifth. By next year, the company plans to open 40 to 73 locations.

Boston Market Corp. (303-278-9500) opened a Boston Market Rotisserie Grill restaurant in Tallahassee, FL. The company also plans to open locations in St. Charles, IL; Westboro, MA; Dallas, TX and New York, NY. Food in the Rotisserie Grill will be served on real china plates with cutlery in carpeted and wood-floor dining rooms with upholstered seats. The restaurant’s menu will be expanded and include items like rotisserie roast sirloin and Asian citrus rotisserie chicken, as well as many other new options. Boston Market currently operates 650 locations throughout 28 states.

Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is planning to open a 15,000 sq.ft. store in Clifton Park, NY during October. The store will be located on Route 146, just west on Interstate 87 in the Village Plaza Shopping Center. The store will include a Cafe Borders. The company currently operates 410 Borders domestic superstores, 33 international Borders stores located primarily in the United Kingdom and the Pacific Rim; 37 Books etc. stores throughout Great Britain and approximately 775 Waldenbooks stores in malls nationwide.

Cheesecake Factory, Inc. (818-871-3000) is planning to open a 14,000 sq.ft. restaurant at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki, HI. The average mainland restaurant for the company is 11,000 sq.ft. The restaurant will open at the Diamond Head end of the center where upscale Hermes Paris is currently located.

Factory 2-U Stores, Inc. (858-627-1800) is anticipating capital expenditures of approximately $5 million in fiscal 2003, which includes costs to open stores, replacement capital for existing stores, information systems software upgrades and hardware replacement and development of the company’s new San Diego distribution center.

McDonald’s Corp. (630-623-3000) is planning to open a 3,650 sq.ft. restaurant along 9A in north Jacksonville, FL.

Fresh Brands, Inc. (920-457-4433) opened a flagship supermarket in Kenosha, WI and a franchise replacement store in Omro, WI. The company currently operates 20 Piggly Wiggly supermarkets and franchises 75 more throughout northern IL and WI.

Beall’s, Inc. (800-250-9206) is planning to open 40 stores by next March. The plan would grow Beall’s to more than 465 stores nationwide. The company also is planning to open locations at a former Kmart store at Creekwood Crossing in East Manatee, FL and the former Appliance Depot location on Cattlemen Road in Sarasota, FL. Four new leases have been signed for outlets toward the 40-store goal, including locations in Fort Myers and Jacksonville, FL and AL and TX. The company is negotiating for sites in five FL cities outside of Manatee and Sarasota counties. The average Beall’s Outlet store is about 15,000 sq.ft.

Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) opened 16 supermarkets and remodeled 10 this year, adding an additional 700,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates 740 supermarkets throughout AL, FL, GA, SC and TN. The company also plans on opening a store situated on a 12-acre parcel at the intersection of Deerfoot Parkway and U.S. Highway 11, just north of Trussville, AL. Stores also are under construction at the Vestavia Hills City Center complex on U.S. 31 atop Shades Mountain and at the intersection of Valleydale and Caldwell Mill Roads in Shelby County, AL. Publix also is planning to open a store at The Village at Lee Branch, a 100,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 280 near Cahaba Valley Road.

Total Entertainment Restaurant Corp. (316-634-0505) is planning to open 10 to 12 locations in fiscal 2003 and 12 to 15 locations during fiscal 2004. Already this year, two units have been opened, three units were under construction, leases had been executed on six additional sites and lease negotiations had begun on three more locations. The company currently owns and operates 56 restaurants under the following names: Fox and Hound Smokehouse & Tavern, Fox and Hound English Pub & Grille, Bailey’s Smokehouse & Tavern, Bailey’s Sports Grille and Bailey’s Pub & Grille. The company operates locations in AL, AR, AZ, CO, GA, IL, IN, KS, LA, MI, MO, NC, NE, OH, PA, SC, TN, TX and VA.

Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) is planning to open a 120,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Broad and Summer Streets in Stamford, CT. The two-story building was formerly a Caldor. Opening is slated for the Fall. The company currently operates CT locations in Stratford, Danbury, Orange, Meriden, East Hartford and New London.

Genesco, Inc. (615-367-7000) expects to open approximately 50 Journeys stores, four Journeys Kids stores, six Johnston & Murphy stores and factory stores, as well as 25 Underground Station stores and to complete 32 major store renovations, including five conversions of Jarman stores to Underground Station stores.

Harley-Davidson, Inc. (414-343-4680) opened a 45,000 sq.ft. Harley-Davidson dealership at White Mountain Mall in Rock Springs, WY. The store will be decorated with genuine antique wagons and other Western memorabilia. The 27,000 sq.ft. retail center includes clothing and accessories. The store also includes a service department with certified and experienced staff.

Rudy’s Bar-B-Q (512-329-5554) opened a restaurant in Waco, TX. This will be the fifth Rudy’s Bar-B-Q owned by Ford Restaurant Group in Austin, TX. The company currently operates 14 restaurants throughout TX and in Albuquerque, NM.

Seattle Coffee Co. (206-254-7142) opened a 900 sq.ft. Seattle’s Best Coffee location at 250 Howe Street in Vancouver, WA. The company currently operates five additional Seattle’s Best Coffee locations in Vancouver and plans to open its seventh cafe later this year. Overall, the company plans to operate 25 cafes throughout British Columbia and Alberta during the coming five years.

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-7950) is planning to open stores in Santiago, Chile. It would be the company’s first store in South America. The company signed a joint venture deal with Grain Red S.A., a local food and beverage company, to begin opening cafes in Santiago during the second half of 2003. The company also is planning to open cafes in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, as well as Central American locations. The company currently operates 6,500 cafes worldwide, including 5,000 stores in the continental U.S., Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The company also markets in 24 other countries.

Shoe Carnival (866-271-5862) opened stores in Denver and Fort Collins, CO; Jupiter, FL; Conyers, GA; Morton Grove, IL; Slidell, LA; Jefferson City, MO; Lima and Niles, OH; Houston, TX; Green Bay and West Bend, WI and Clarksburg, WV. The company also is planning to open 11 stores during the second quarter and 16 stores in the second half of this year. Shoe Carnival currently operates 221 stores located throughout the Midwest, South and Southeast.

Marshalls, Inc. (888-Marshalls) and Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) opened stores at the intersection of Routes 206 and 94 in Newton and Hampton, NJ. Marshalls opened a 30,000 sq.ft. store at the Sussex County Mall on Route 206 in Hampton. The store will occupy the building that was formerly occupied by Jamesway. The Home Depot is slated for a June opening.

Galyan’s Trading Co. (317-612-2000) opened an 80,000 sq.ft. sports and outdoor adventure store in Greenwood, IN. The company has opened three stores this year and is planning to open six additional locations. The IN store includes Galyan’s first-ever Hall of Fame memorabilia shop. Also featured is a department offering expanded assortments in action sports equipment such as wakeboards, skateboards, snowboards, footwear and apparel. The company currently operates 37 stores througout 17 states with 15 specialty stores.
