Who's Opening & Where Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to expand its P2004 prototype stores, adding 200 new or remodeled P2004 stores by the end of the year. The stores were rolled out in October and feature a large baby section that prominently showcases diapers and other necessities, an expanded entertainment department and a larger selection of consumable items. Target currently operates approximately 1,550 stores throughout three formats: Target, a discount chain with more than 1,200 stores, including giant SuperTarget stores; 266 Mervyn’s mid-range department stores, found mainly in the west and south; and Marshall Field’s upscale department stores in the upper Midwest.
Wing Zone (404-875-5045) is planning to open a store at Price Plaza, a center located at the intersection of 28th Avenue and Jefferson Street in Nashville, TN. The Wing Zone franchise is expanding nationwide with locations throughout 20 states. The only other site in TN is in Murfreesboro, near Middle Tennessee State University.
Family Video (217-544-2001) is planning to open a video store at the intersection of North Jefferson Street and Edith Boulevard in Huntington, IN. Opening is slated for the Fall.
Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is planning to open six Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants throughout the Houston, TX area by March 2005. The first location is scheduled to open early this summer at 19823 Northwest Freeway at the intersection of Highway 290 and FM 1960. The expansion will continue with a second location planned at the intersection of Fry Road and Interstate 10. The company operates more than 1,580 Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar locations across the U.S. and in nine other countries. Applebee’s International owns and operates nearly 25% of its restaurants; the rest are franchised.
Movie Gallery, Inc. (334-677-2108) is planning to open a Movie Gallery store at the south end of Huntington Plaza in Huntington, IN. The space was formerly occupied by Owen’s Supermarket. The Movie Gallery store will occupy 4,000 sq.ft. of the 20,000 sq.ft. building. Overall, the company is looking to open from 250 to 300 stores this year. Movie Gallery owns or franchises more than 2,200 video rental stores throughout all 50 states and Canada. Located mainly in rural and secondary markets, its stores rent and sell up to 20,000 movie titles and 1,000 video games. In addition, Movie Gallery sells videos and merchandise on the Internet and owns the Video Update chain (about 320 stores).
O’Charley’s, Inc. (615-256-8500) is planning to open approximately 15 O’Charley’s restaurants this year, with all the locations opening throughout existing markets. The company also expects to open approximately 12 Ninety Nine restaurants this year, also throughout existing markets. O’Charley’s, Inc. operates 213 O’Charley’s restaurants throughout 16 states in the Southeast and Midwest, as well as 91 Ninety Nine Restaurant & Pub locations throughout CT, MA, ME, NH, NY, RI and VT. In addition, the company operates six Stoney River Legendary Steaks restaurants throughout GA, IL, KY and TN.
Old Navy, Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to open a 14,800 sq.ft. Old Navy store on Rib Mountain Drive in Rib Mountain, WI. Opening is slated for November.
Subway Development Corp. (203-877-4281) is planning to open 2,500 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada by the end of the year.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a 152,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart store at the intersection of Route 176 and Routes 60/83 in Mundelein, IL. Plans include room to expand to 219,000 sq.ft., which could boost the location to a supercenter category. The store would be situated on a land area of 31 acres. The company currently operates more than 4,800 stores, including approximately 1,475 discount stores, 1,750 Wal-Mart Supercenters in the U.S. and United Kingdom and 540 Sam’s Club warehouse stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal-Mart is expanding internationally, with stores in Canada and Mexico.
Caribou Coffee Co., Inc. (612-359-2700) is planning to open up to 75 stores this year and up to 100 stores next year. The sites would be located mainly throughout existing markets, but will also include locations in Richmond, VA and Cincinnati, OH. Caribou Coffee Company owns and operates more than 250 stores throughout nine states. The outlets, designed to resemble ski lodges and Alaskan cabins, offer a wide variety of coffee blends as well as specialty coffee drinks. The company also sells whole bean coffee and related brewing supplies.
Muvico Theaters, Inc. (954-564-6550) is planning to open a 20-screen megaplex movie theater at Aviation Plaza, a 500,000 sq.ft. center located in Linden, NJ. The theater will feature approximately 4,000 seats. The company currently operates 12 theaters throughout FL, MD and TN, with additional screens in various stages of development across the southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states. Country Gas (256-851-6067) recently opened an Embers grill and fireplace store in Brentwood, TN. Country Gas owns Embers locations throughout northern AL and southern TN. Embers product line features fireplace systems, gas grills, logs, custom mantles and other specialty items.
JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is planning to open a JCPenney store at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Ray Road in the Ahwatukee Foothills of East Valley, AZ. The space was formerly occupied by Kmart. Opening is slated for January. The company also operates an outlet store at Arizona Mills in Tempe, AZ and department and furniture stores at Superstition Springs Center in east Mesa, AZ. JCPenney is building freestanding stores and plans to open four locations throughout IN, MN and TX. Three of those will be built new, while a fourth will locate in a former Kmart space. It also plans to open seven stores this year.
Office Depot, Inc. (561-438-4800) is planning to open up to 60 Office Depot stores throughout the Northeast. Office Depot sells office supplies at more than 1,000 company-owned and licensed stores worldwide, including about 900 located in the U.S.
City Furniture (954-597-2200) signed an agreement with Ashley Furniture Industries and plans to open 13 Ashley Furniture HomeStores by 2007. The first three stores are slated to open this month, July and August. The first 35,000 sq.ft. Ashley store will open at Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise, FL, while a 32,000 sq.ft. store will open in West Palm Beach next month and 22,000 sq.ft. store will open in Kendall during August.
Camping World (866-694-1580) has begun expansion plans that include the opening of stores at four RV dealerships. The expansion plan is designed the align the company with prominent dealers and create an “all-inclusive” one-stop outlet for RV sales and service. The company specializes in the sale of supplies and accessories for recreational vehicles. The first Camping World store will open in Alpin Haus in Amsterdam, NY and the company also has agreements to open stores in Clarksville, IN; Spartanburg, SC and Elkhart, IN. The company operates 31 retail locations as well as Internet and catalog sales.
