Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is planning to open a 144,000 sq.ft. Nordstrom department store at The Gardens Mall located in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Opening is slated for Spring

2006. The store will be the company’s third in Palm Beach County and its seventh location in the state. Nordstrom will occupy a portion of the existing Burdines building. The company also is planning to open locations at the Dadeland Mall in Miami, FL during November and at The Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables, FL. The company sells clothes, shoes, and accessories through approximately 90 Nordstrom stores and about 50 outlet stores, including Nordstrom Rack, throughout 25 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and more than 30 Façonnable boutiques, primarily in Europe.

 

Famous Dave’s of America, Inc. (952-294-1300) is planning to open approximately 20 to 25 franchised restaurants this year. The barbecue restaurants operate and franchise more than 90 restaurants in more than 20 states, primarily throughout IL, MN and WI. The eateries serve St. Louis-style ribs, Georgia chopped pork and Texas brisket. Most restaurants resemble 1930s-era roadhouse shacks, although others follow the decor of a hunting lodge or a Chicago-style blues club featuring live music. The company also distributes barbecue sauce, seasonings, and prepared meats through grocery stores. Famous Dave’s owns approximately 40% of its restaurants and franchises the rest.

 

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-7950) is currently opening stores at a rate of 3.5 per day or 1,300 per year. Ultimately, the chain plans to be operating 25,000 stores. This year, the company is looking to open 950 stores, including 325 locations with drive-thrus. Starbucks currently operates and licenses more than 7,500 coffee shops throughout more than 30 countries. Starbucks operates more than 4,700 of its shops throughout five countries, primarily in the U.S., while its licensees operate more than 2,800 units, primarily in shopping centers and airports. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains in the U.S. with more than 100 shops.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (650-837-5000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter on Mason-Montgomery Road in Deerfield Township, OH. Construction also is underway for a Wal*Mart-anchored center, which will be cotenanted with Bed Bath & Beyond, Old Navy, Joyce Leslie and Sleepy’s. Opening is slated for February 2005. The company currently operates more than 2,942 discount stores, supercenters and Neighborhood Markets and more than 530 Sam’s Club locations.

 

Wendy’s International, Inc. (614-764-3100) is planning to open a Wendy’s restaurant at the former International House of Pancakes located at the intersection of 1235 VFW Parkway and Gardner Street in West Roxbury, MA. The 3,200 sq.ft. restaurant is expected to be built on a 35,000 sq.ft. lot. The company currently operates approximately 6,500 Wendy’s restaurants worldwide, with 80% of them franchised. The company also operates Tim Hortons, the Canadian-based coffee and baked-goods chain with more than 2,500 locations, and Baja Fresh Mexican Grill with more than 280 quick-service restaurants.

 

Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-245-5366) recently opened a 7,000 sq.ft. Smokey Bones Bar-B-Q restaurant in Brentwood, TN. The restaurant is located about a mile north of the Cool Springs Galleria Mall. The restaurant’s décor features logs, a stone fireplace and a rustic mountain retreat environment. Darden Restaurants, Inc. currently operates more than 1,300 restaurants under the following tradenames: Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Bahama Breeze and Seasons 52. The company operates approximately 59 Smokey Bones locations throughout the U.S.

 

CVS Corp. (401-765-1500) is planning to open a CVS drug store at the intersection of Kedzie Avenue and 175th Street in Hazel Crest, IL. Opening is slated for November. The company currently operates approximately 4,200 stores throughout 33 states and Washington, DC.

 

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers (303-846-6000) is planning to open a restaurant in the Albany, NY area. The company also is looking to open three more restaurants in upstate NY. One or more of the locations could be located in central NY during the next couple of years. The company operates approximately 200 casual-dining restaurants that specialize in gourmet hamburgers.

 

Granite City Food & Brewery (952-525-2030) is looking to open two restaurants during the second quarter of this year, with one location in Maple Grove, MN and the other in Lincoln, NE. The company currently operates six restaurants throughout MN, ND and SD. The restaurants offer a variety of handcrafted beers that are brewed on-site. The menu features chicken, meatloaf, and steak, as well as burgers, salads, and sandwiches.

 

McCormick & Schmick’s (503-226-3440) recently opened a McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant in the Denver Technological Center located at 8100 East Union Avenue in Denver, CO. The restaurant will include a bar, oyster bar, two outdoor patios and two private dining/banquet rooms. The company currently operates more than 50 restaurants under the following tradenames: Jake’s Grill, Jake’s Famous Crawfish, McCormick’s & Kuleto’s and Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto, as well as McCormick’s and McCormick & Schmicks. Its restaurants typically range in size from 6,000 sq.ft. to 14,000 sq.ft. and are often located in historical buildings. Overall, the company plans to open restaurants this year in Birmingham, AL; Providence, RI and San Diego, CA.

 

The May Department Stores, Inc. (314-342-6300) is planning to open eight department stores totaling 1.3 million sq.ft. and remodeling or expanding 12 stores totaling 1.1 million sq.ft. The company’s Bridal Group also is in the process of adding 30 David’s Bridal stores, 20 After Hours stores and two Priscilla of Boston locations totaling 345,000 sq.ft.

 

The Gymboree Corp. (650-579-0600) is planning to open a Janeville women’s clothing store in the Santa Clara Valley Fair Shopping Center in Santa Clara, CA. The store will be designed to feel like a woman’s cottage located somewhere that could pass for the Sonoma Valley and is targeted at women aged 35 years and older. The stores will offer career and formal wear. Overall, the company plans to open 10 Janeville stores this year. Recent openings include a store on Burlingame Avenue in Burlingame, CA and in Bellevue, WA. The company sells clothes and accessories for kids throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. Its approximately 580 Gymboree stores carry playsuits and rompers for kids up to seven years old.

 

Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. (310-536-0611) is planning to open approximately 15 to 20 stores, as well as making store improvements. The company currently operates approximately 293 sporting goods stores throughout AZ, CA, WA and seven other Western states. The company sells brand-name equipment and clothing for indoor and outdoor activities. Big 5 has stuck with a neighborhood-store format rather than opening larger superstores.
