Meijer, Inc. (616-453-6711) is planning to open six Meijer’s stores throughout MI this year. The stores are slated to open in White Lake Township, Southfield, Gaines Township, Holland Township, Marysville and Ionia. Most of the stores are slated to open by this summer. The company currently operates 163 combination supermarket and general merchandise stores throughout IL, IN, KY, MI and OH. The stores occupy spaces of approximately 200,000 sq.ft. to 250,000 sq.ft. and stock about 120,000 items, including Meijer private-label products.

 

Whataburger, Inc. (361-878-0650) is planning to open a Whataburger restaurant at the intersection of Hillsborough and Lois Avenues in Tampa, FL, as well as locations in Palm Harbor, New Port Richey and Zephyrhills. The company also plans to open 118 more restaurants throughout Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville, FL. With more than 600 owned and franchised outlets, the company operates a popular fast-food chain in TX, OK and eight other southern states. Whataburger restaurants are typically open 24 hours a day and serve burgers and fries along with breakfast items, fajitas, chicken and salads. Less than half of the company’s restaurants are franchised.

 

Philly Connection (800-886-8826) is planning to open restaurants throughout Voorhees and Wayne, NJ this year, as well as looking for other possible locations within the state. The company currently operates approximately 130 franchised restaurants throughout eight states, including AL, FL, GA, TN and VA.

 

H.H. Gregg Appliances, Inc. (317-848-8710) is planning to open 13 H.H. Gregg stores this year, including two Fine Line stores, its high-end concept. The company currently operates more than 60 stores throughout AL, GA, IN, KY, OH and TN. H.H. Gregg’s offerings include consumer electronics, as well as small appliances, large appliances and accessories.

 

Petco Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. (858-453-7845) is planning to open approximately 90 stores, or about 70 new stores net of relocations and closings, while continuing with its initiative of remodeling up to 50 existing stores. The company currently operates approximately 655 shops throughout more than 40 states and Washington, D.C. Its 15,000 sq.ft. superstores carry some 10,000 pet-related items, including premium cat and dog foods, collars, leashes, grooming products, toys and animal habitats. The stores also offer grooming, obedience training, vet services and sponsors pet adoption for cats and dogs with local animal-welfare organizations.

 

BJ’s Restaurants, Inc. (714-848-3747) is planning to open restaurants this year. The company currently owns and operates 35 casual dining restaurants under the BJ’s Restaurant and Brewery, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse or BJ’s Pizza & Grill brandnames. The company also operates 10 microbreweries, which produce BJ’s handcrafted beers throughout the chain. The company operates 24 restaurants throughout CA, five throughout TX, three throughout OR and one each in AZ, CO and NV. BJ’s Restaurants, Inc. also has a licensing interest in a BJ’s restaurant in Lahaina, Maui, HI.

 

CATO Corp. (704-554-8510) is planning to open 90 stores this year. The stores occupy spaces of 4,000 sq.ft. to 5,000 sq.ft. and typically locate in supermarket-anchored strip centers. Area demographics include a population of 20,000. The company currently operates approximately 1,025 women’s apparel specialty stores under the names Cato, Cato Plus, It’s Fashion! and Cato Fashions. Its private-label merchandise includes misses’, juniors’, and plus-sized sportswear, career wear, coats, hosiery, shoes and accessories priced for low- to middle-income females. Cato’s stores are currently located mainly in small-town strip centers throughout 28 states, primarily in the Southeast.

 

Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. (314-423-8000) is planning to open two “baseball park” stores and three Friends 2B Made stores this year. The company also expects to open approximately 30 Build-A-Bear Workshop stores throughout the U.S. and Canada, including a flagship store in New York, NY. The company’s international franchisees expect to open between 15 and 20 stores this year. Located mainly in malls, the stores allow kids to design their own teddy bears and other stuffed animals complete with clothing, shoes and accessories. Build-A-Bear currently operates approximately 170 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada and franchises stores overseas.

 

Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. (310-536-0611) is planning to open between 16 and 20 stores during fiscal 2005. The company currently operates approximately 309 sporting goods stores throughout AZ, CA and WA, as well as seven other western states. The company sells brand-name equipment and clothing for indoor and outdoor activities, including products for camping, hunting, fishing, tennis, golf, snowboarding and inline skating. The stores average approximately 11,000 sq.ft.

 

Sears, Roebuck and Co. (847-286-2500) is planning to open Sears Essentials stores next month. The openings will come from the 56 stores Sears bought from Kmart Holding Corp. and Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. Most of the 25 Sears Essentials stores are located in the southern or Sun Belt states. The company currently operates more than 870 U.S. mall-based stores and has approximately 1,100 other locations nationwide. Sears also operates more than 790 independently owned Sears dealer stores in small towns and about 245 hardware stores, such as Orchard Supply Hardware and Sears Hardware. The stores sell apparel, tools and appliances, as well as providing home services under the Sears HomeCentral brand.

 

Hancock Fabrics (662-842-2834) is looking to open locations nationwide. The fabric stores occupy spaces of 12,500 sq.ft. to 15,000 sq.ft. The company caters to customers who sew by offering fabrics, crafts and sewing accessories through nearly 450 stores, mostly in shopping centers, throughout 42 states.

 

La-Z-Boy, Inc. (734-242-1444) is planning to open approximately 50 “New Generation” stores during fiscal 2006, with over 20 of those being new stores and the remainder being store remodels or relocations. The company currently operates 328 freestanding La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries stores and 334 La-Z-Boy In-Store Galleries locations. La-Z-Boy also makes business and wood furniture, including desks, cabinets and bedroom items and supplies furniture for the hospitality and health care industries. Its more than a dozen brands include La-Z-Boy, Bauhaus USA, Hammary, Lea, and Kincaid.

 

H.E.B. Grocery (210-938-8000) is planning to open an H-E-B Plus supermarket in Austin, TX later this year. The company currently operates 300 locations.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a 99,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart store in Benson, AZ. The company currently operates more than 4,800 stores, including approximately 1,475 Wal*Mart stores, 1,750 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations and 540 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of the company’s stores are located throughout the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns nearly 38% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open Whole Foods Market stores in Lake Oswego, OR; Seattle, WA; Novato and Pasadena, CA; Scottsdale, AZ and Annapolis and Rockville, MD. The company currently operates more than 160 stores throughout 28 states; Washington, DC; and in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for about two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,200 items in six lines of private-label products such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children called Whole Kids.

 

Gander Mountain Co. (952-830-8700) is planning to open between 18 and 20 stores this year, including three or four store relocations and consolidations during the year. The company currently operates 82 outdoor sporting goods stores focused on hunting, camping and fishing throughout 14 mainly Midwestern states. In addition to outdoor equipment and related accessories, the stores also sell apparel and footwear, as well as all terrain vehicles and gear.

 

Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. (303-664-4000) is planning to open Rock Bottom Brewery restaurants in Indianapolis, IN; Colorado Springs, CO and two throughout the Midwest. The stores range in size from 8,500 sq.ft. to 9,500 sq.ft. in freestanding locations, malls, downtown areas and strip and entertainment centers. The company currently operates 31 locations throughout AZ, CA, CO, IA, IL, IN, MA, MD, MN, OH, OR, PA, VA, WA, WI and Washington, DC.

 

Shoe Carnival, Inc. (812-867-4034) is planning to open between eight and 10 stores this year. Five stores are slated to open during the first quarter. The company is looking to completely remodel 10 stores to the latest store design and partially remodel an additional 30 stores, adding a significant portion of the latest design elements. The company currently operates 259 locations throughout the Midwest, South and Southeast.

 

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse (949-222-2223) is planning to open a Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar restaurant near the Jordan Creek’s lake area in Des Moines, IA. The company currently operates locations nationwide, including restaurants in Birmingham, AL; Chandler, DC Ranch and Scottsdale, AZ; El Segundo, La Jolla, Newport Beach, San Diego and Rancho Mirage, CA; Tampa and Winter Park, FL; Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Edgewater, NJ; Las Vegas and Summerlin, NV; Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin and Houston, TX; Salt Lake City, UT and Richmond and Tyson’s Corner, VA.
