Who's Opening & Where Weis Markets, Inc. (570-286-4571) is planning to open eight superstores this year, including five replacement locations, the expansion of 11 stores and the remodeling of 11 others. The company currently operates approximately 155 supermarkets, mostly in PA but also in MD and four other states. In addition to the Weis Markets banner, the company also operates as Mr. Z’s Food Mart, King’s Supermarkets, Save-A-Lot and Scot’s Lo-Cost. Weis Markets also owns 30-plus SuperPetz pet supply stores in 11 southern and midwestern states.
New World Restaurant Group, Inc. (303-568-8000) is planning to open a Einstein Bros. Café in Denver and Colorado Springs, CO. The company currently operates approximately 700 company-owned and franchised locations throughout 34 states and Washington, DC. The company currently operates approximately 1,025 women’s apparel specialty stores under the names Cato, Cato Plus, It’s Fashion! and Cato Fashions. Its mostly private-label merchandise includes misses’, juniors’ and plus-sized sportswear, career wear, coats, hosiery, shoes and accessories priced for low- to middle-income female customers mostly ages 18 to 50. Cato’s stores are currently located mainly in small-town strip centers throughout 28 states, primarily in the Southeast.
Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a Target store on Matthew Drive in South Union Township, PA. Opening is slated for the end of the year. The company currently operates approximately 1,310 Target and SuperTarget stores throughout 47 states, as well as an online business called Target.com. Target, SuperTarget and Target Greatland offer more upscale, fashion-forward merchandise than rivals Wal*Mart and Kmart. Target also owns apparel supplier The Associated Merchandising Corp. and issues Target Visa and its proprietary Target Card.
Robeks Fruit Smoothies & Health Eats (310-727-0500) is planning to open locations in Simi Valley, CA and Overland Park, KS next month. The company prefers to locate in major shopping centers, street front buildings, office buildings and complexes, airports, universities and other non-traditional locations. Preferred demographics include a population of 30,000 within two miles earning $45,000 as the average household income. Preferred cotenants include health clubs and office buildings. Traditional street-oriented stores occupy spaces of 900 sq.ft. to 1,200 sq.ft., while office/non-traditional locations occupy spaces of 250 sq.ft. to 900 sq.ft.
Sub Station II (803-773-4711) is planning to open a restaurant at the intersection of Broughton Street and John C. Calhoun Drive in Orangeburg, SC. Beyond the traditional subs and salads, Sub Station II will offer hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, smoked turkey club sandwich, fish fillet sandwiches, chicken fillet sandwiches and tuna salads. The company currently operates approximately 47 locations throughout SC. The company also operates restaurants throughout CA, GA, KY, NC, TN and VA.
McDonald’s Corp. (630-623-3000) opened a 24,000 sq.ft. flagship restaurant in Des Plaines, IL. The restaurant displays five decades of McDonald’s memorabilia and incorporates the classic red-and-white design or the company’s first restaurant. It also carries more high-tech touches such as wi-fi, two Internet stations with music downloading and instant photo printing capabilities. The company currently operates more than 31,000 flagship restaurants serving burgers and fries throughout more than 100 countries. Almost 30% of its locations are company-owned; the others are run by franchisees. While most of the company’s eateries are freestanding locations, it does have some quick-service kiosk units located in airports and retail areas. McDonald’s also owns the Boston Market and Chipotle Mexican Grill fast-casual chains.
Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to raise its potential for stores throughout North America by 20%, and announced its expansion plans for its freestanding Geek Squad stores. The company also is planning to open lab stores throughout China during the coming 12 to 18 months. Best Buy expects the majority of additional openings to be 20,000 sq.ft. locations, which can be deployed in smaller markets, in metropolitan areas and between larger stores in suburban areas. The company also plans to expand its service offerings by opening 20 to 50 freestanding Geek Squad stores this year. Geek Squad stores offer rapid-response technology support, including virus removal, network repair and installation, data recovery and data transfer and occupy spaces of 1,500 sq.ft. Best Buy currently operates over 780 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The company operates its stores under the retail banners Best Buy, Future Shop, in Canada, and Magnolia Audio Video, with locations in the western U.S.
Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open a Whole Foods Market at Southgate Market a 320,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Canal in Chicago, IL. Opening is slated for late 2006 or early 2007. The company currently operates more than 160 stores throughout 28 states and Washington, DC, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. The Nordstrom store will occupy a space of 165,000 sq.ft. and is slated to open during fall 2007. The store will offer shoes, clothing and accessories for men, women and children in well-known national brands and lines exclusive to Nordstrom. The company currently operates approximately 95 Nordstrom stores and about 50 outlet stores called Nordstrom Rack throughout about 25 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store and about 35 Façonnable boutiques, located primarily in Europe, and it sells goods online and through catalogs.
The Quiznos Master, LLC (720-359-3300) is planning to expand aggressively throughout MI. The company currently operates approximately 3,500 quick-service Quiznos Sub restaurants that are popular for their made-to-order, oven-toasted subs. Patrons can choose from a variety of signature subs, such as the Honey Bourbon Chicken, BBQ Chipotle Carved Turkey or Honey Bacon Club. Quiznos also serves salads, soups, and dessert items. Sonic Corp. (405-225-5000) is planning to open approximately 200 Sonic Drive-In restaurants in fiscal 2005, including about 170 by franchisees. The largest chain of quick-service drive-ins in the U.S., Sonic operates about 535 restaurants and franchises more than 2,325 locations throughout 30 states, primarily in the South. The eateries offer such items as hamburgers, extra-long cheese coney dogs, tater tots and cherry limeades. Customers order via intercom from a menu board located in each parking space and carhops deliver the food in an average of four minutes. Some locations, about 125, also offer dine-in seating and drive-thru service. Sonic also has locations in Mexico.
Goody’s Family Clothing, Inc. (865-966-2000) is planning to open Goody’s Family Clothing stores in Cleburne, TX and in Gadsden, AL this year. The company also is looking to open locations in Madison, IN and Mount Vernon and Pekin, IL. The company currently operates 357 stores throughout AL, AR, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MO, MS, NC, OH, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA and WV. The stores sell clothes, shoes, accessories and gift items.

Beyond its more than 870 U.S. mall-based stores, Sears operates approximately 1,100 other locations nationwide. Ross Stores, Inc. (925-965-4400) is planning to open a 28,600 sq.ft. Ross Dress For Less store at Cordova Mall in Pensacola, FL. Overall, the company is looking to open five stores throughout FL this year. The company currently operates 639 locations throughout 26 states. The company sells mostly closeout merchandise, including men’s, women’s and children’s clothing at prices well below those of department and specialty stores. The stores also sell small furnishings, educational toys and games, luggage and gourmet foods in select stores.
Whataburger, Inc. (361-878-0650) is planning to open a Whataburger restaurant at the intersection of Hillsborough and Lois Avenues in Tampa, FL, as well as locations in Palm Harbor, New Port Richey and Zephyrhills. The company also plans to open 118 more restaurants throughout Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville, FL. The Canton store will feature four model homes, 50 room settings, a supervised children’s play area, as well as a 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties and American dishes. IKEA currently operates 210 stores throughout 32 countries. Other stores slated to open in the U.S. this year include locations in Atlanta, GA; Brooklyn, NY; Dublin and West Sacramento, CA; Frisco, TX; and Somerville and Stoughton, MA.
Longs Drug Stores Corp. (925-937-1170) is planning to open or relocate five to 10 Longs Drug Store outlets in the current fiscal 2006 year and is looking to more than triple the number of openings in fiscal 2007. The chain currently operates approximately 470 stores throughout the western U.S. and HI. Known for giving store managers autonomy to select merchandise, its stores add local flavor by carrying specialty items popular in the neighborhoods they serve. Longs Drug’s RxAmerica subsidiary provides pharmacy benefit management services.
H.H. Gregg Appliances, Inc. (317-848-8710) is planning to open five H.H. Gregg stores during fiscal 2006. These include four stores in NC and SC and one relocated store in the Bowling Green, KY market. The company anticipates opening three of the stores throughout the Charlotte, NC market during the first quarter of fiscal 2006. During the 2006 fiscal year, the company is looking to open approximately eight to 10 new or relocated stores. The company currently sells its products through more than 60 stores in the Midwest, including AL, GA, IN, KY, OH and TN. H.H.
Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a Cabela’s store in Reno, NV. The store will be 150,000 sq.ft. and is slated to open late next year or early 2007. The company also is planning to open a store on a land area of 32 acres at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Louisiana Highway in Gonzales, LA by early next year. The 175,000 sq.ft. store could open as early as next spring. The company currently operates 10 locations. Cabela’s also is planning to open a 230,000 sq.ft. store in Fort Worth, TX; a 185,000 sq.ft. store in Buda, TX and a 150,000 sq.ft. store in Lehi, UT. Also planned are locations in Rogers, MN; Wheat Ridge, CO and in East Rutherford, NJ. The stores include such features as waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums and banquet and meeting facilities.
Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (817-252-8000) is planning to open 60 Pier 1 Imports stores and two Pier 1 Kids stores in fiscal 2006. The company sells about 4,000 items, which are imported from more than 40 countries, through approximately 1,100 Pier 1 Imports stores in the U.S. and Canada and through its The Pier chain, which operates 29 locations in the United Kingdom.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart store in Manassas Mall located in Manassas, VA. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2006. The store will occupy a space of 90,000 sq.ft., formerly occupied by Sears. The company currently operates more than 5,200 stores, including 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations throughout the U.S. and the United Kingdom and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are located in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 37% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.
Pathmark Stores, Inc. (732-499-3000) is planning to open two stores this year, as well as renovate eight locations. Both stores are slated to open during the second half of the year. The company currently operates 142 supermarkets, all under the Pathmark banner throughout DE, NJ, NY and PA. Many of its stores are Pathmark Super Centers, which offer an expanded selection of general merchandise and foods, nearly all have pharmacies, and more than half have in-store banks.
Zaxby’s Franchising, Inc. (706-353-8107) is planning to open a Zaxby’s restaurant on Mundy Mill Road in Oakwood, GA. Opening is slated for this month. The restaurant, which will be the company’s fourth in Hall County, GA, will be built in Zaxby’s newest design, which has vintage memorabilia and signage. Food Concepts International (806-785-8686) is planning to open an Abuelo’s Mexican Food Embassy restaurant at Greyhound Commons, a center located at the intersection of 146th Street and U.S. 31 on the Carmel-Westfield, IN border. Opening is slated for next month. The Carmel-Westfield site will be the first in the state of IN and the 24th in the chain. The restaurant will occupy a space of 7,800 sq.ft.
Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse (949-222-2223) is planning to open a Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar restaurant near the Jordan Creek’s lake area in Des Moines, IA. Logan’s Roadhouse, Inc. (615-885-9056) is planning to open a Logan’s Roadhouse restaurant on Centre Drive in Beavercreek, OH. Area retail includes Fairfield Commons. Opening is slated for March 2006. Logan’s Roadhouse operates and franchises approximately 135 casual-dining steakhouses throughout 18 states, mostly in the Southeast and southern Midwest. Designed to resemble roadhouses from the 1930s to the 1950s, the restaurants’ exteriors are highlighted with rough-hewn cedar siding, corrugated metal, and neon. Inside, patrons listen to Wurlitzer jukeboxes and eat peanuts. |
