Famous Dave’s of America, Inc. (952-294-1300) is planning to open a 6,000 sq.ft. Famous Dave’s BBQ restaurant on Route 347 in Smithtown, NY. Famous Dave’s of America operates and franchises approximately 110 barbecue restaurants throughout more than 20 states, primarily IL, MN and WI. The eateries serve St. Louis-style ribs, Georgia chopped pork and Texas brisket. Most restaurants resemble 1930s-era roadhouse shacks, although others follow the decor of a hunting lodge or a Chicago-style blues club featuring live music. Famous Dave’s owns about 40% of its restaurants and franchises the rest.

 

Fox & Hound Restaurant Group (316-634-0505) is planning to open a Fox & Hound Pub & Grill location at Jefferson Pointe, a center located in Fort Wayne, IN. The space was formerly occupied by Red Star Tavern. Opening is slated for later this year or early 2006. Fox & Hound Restaurant Group gives the English pub idea a decidedly American sports twist. The company operates a chain of 75 establishments throughout more than 20 states, doing business under both the Fox &  Hound and Bailey’s tradenames. Its locations offer full bar and restaurant service, as well as games such as billiards and darts, and banks of televisions showing a variety of sporting events. Its menu of standard American bar food includes barbecue, burgers, pizzas, and appetizers such as Buffalo wings, fries, and onion rings.

 

MaggieMoo’s International, LLC (410-740-2100) is planning to open a Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream & Treatery this year at the Village in Des Moines, IA. Area retail includes Portrait Innovations and Camille’s Sidewalk Café. The company franchises more than 100 MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream & Treatery shops throughout 35 states, as well as in Thailand. The parlors offer a variety of premium high-butterfat ice cream flavors that can be augmented with candy, fruit, and nuts folded into the ice cream. The chain also offers shakes, smoothies and frozen cakes. The company is attempting a massive franchising growth spurt, hoping to grow to 1,000 locations to better compete with ColdStone and Marble Slab.

 

Panera Bread Co. (314-633-7100) is planning to open a Panera Bread location in Des Moines, IA. Area retail includes Cheesecake Factory and Champps Restaurant & Bar. The company operates more than 740 bakery/cafes throughout approximately 35 states. Its locations, which operate under the Panera and Saint Louis Bread Company banners, offer made-to-order sandwiches built using a variety of artisan breads, including Asiago cheese bread, focaccia and its classic sourdough bread. Its menu also features soups, salads and gourmet coffees. In addition, Panera sells its bread, bagels and pastries to go. Approximately 70% of its locations are operated by franchisees.

 

Hooters of America, Inc. (770-951-2040) is looking to open a Hooters restaurant location in the Jacksonville Beach, FL area. The company recently closed a restaurant on South Third Street in the area and is looking for a substitute location. Hooters currently operates four restaurants in northeast FL, including locations in Orange Park, the Regency Square area, The Jacksonville Landing area and on San Jose Boulevard. Hooters of America operates and franchises more than 350 Hooters restaurants throughout approximately 40 U.S. states and approximately 20 other countries. The beach-themed bar-and-grills cater to sports fans and are known for their spicy chicken wings as well as their hostesses, who dress in the chain’s trademark bright orange short shorts and tight T-shirts. Hooters also serves chili, sandwiches and beer. The company operates 118 locations and franchises the rest.

 

Family Sports Concepts, Inc. (813-226-2333) is planning to open 46 Beef O’Brady’s locations this year, with the plan to open 250 during the coming five years. Family Sports Concepts operates a chain of more than 160 wholly franchised Beef O’Brady’s family-style pubs throughout approximately 15 states nationwide, primarily in FL. The restaurants feature Buffalo-style chicken wings along with sandwiches, burgers, and a selection of appetizers.

 

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open a Whole Foods Market at Tiffany Plaza in Denver, CO. The supermarket will place a bigger emphasis on café-style dining and ready-to-eat options. The store will incorporate aspects of the company’s recently opened Austin, TX flagship store, including interactive food-prep areas and meal counters with café-style seating scattered throughout. The company also is testing its first wine store, Merchant of Vino, in the new location. The company also is looking to open a Whole Foods Market in the Belmar development in Lakewood, CO. At the new Whole Foods, the company has expanded to five salad bars and various dining stations where customers can order food to go or eat at the counter or café-style tables. The new food stations include an Italian trattoria, a mini-seafood restaurant and a barbecue station. Additionally, there’s a specialty candy market where customers can have everything from marshmallows to fruit dipped in chocolate. The company currently operates 160-plus stores throughout 28 states, Washington, DC, and in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for about two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,200 items in six lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children called Whole Kids. In addition, the company has moved into related businesses, offering nutritional supplements.

 

Giant Food Stores, LLC (717-249-4000) is planning to open a 91,000 sq.ft. prototype store with approximately 27,000 sq.ft. of mezzanine space at a center in Camp Hill, PA. Opening is slated for the end of this month. The store will be the largest in the Giant/Martin’s Food Markets chain. The store is expected to offer advances in technology and additional new services, including a section featuring organic and natural brand products, as well as full-time nutritionists to advise shoppers. The site also is expected to include a culinary school and specialty cheese department, among other new sections for the store. The company currently operates 101 Giant Food Stores, 152 Tops Market locations and 21 Martin’s Food Markets locations throughout six states.

 

The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open a 133,000 sq.ft. Home Depot store at Northpointe Center located on Ohio 60 North in Zanesville, OH. Cotenants include Kohl’s, T.J. Maxx, MC Sports, Famous Footwear and Dollar Tree. The company currently operates approximately 1,900 stores throughout 50 U.S. states, Washington, DC, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. It targets the do-it-yourself and professional markets with a broad product assortment, up to 50,000 items, including lumber, floor and wall coverings, plumbing, gardening supplies, tools, paint, and even appliances. It’s the largest seller of garden products in North America and also runs more than 50 EXPO Design Center stores, which are showrooms featuring bath, kitchen, and lighting products.

 

BJ’s Restaurants, Inc. (714-848-3747) is planning to open four restaurants by the end of the year. The company currently owns and operates approximately 40 restaurants throughout six western states under the names BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery, BJ’s Pizza & Grill and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse. The company operates 28 locations throughout CA; five throughout TX; three in OR; two in AZ and one each in CO and NV. The casual-dining eateries offer Chicago-style pizza, salad, sandwiches, pasta, and the company’s own hand-crafted beers. The company’s 11 microbreweries supply the entire chain.

 

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. (303-846-6000) is planning to open four company-owned Red Robin restaurants during the quarter. By the end of the year, the company expects to open 26 corporate restaurants and 15 to 17 franchised restaurants. The company currently operates a chain of more than 275 casual-dining restaurants throughout nearly 30 U.S. states and Canada that specialize in high-end hamburgers. Its menu features more than 20 different twists on the American classic, including the Pot Roast Burger, the Banzai Burger, and the jalapeño-charged Five Alarm Burger. Red Robin also serves chicken, seafood, and turkey burgers, as well as vegetarian alternatives. Non-burger entrées include salads, pasta, seafood, and fajitas. The company owns about half of its locations and franchises the rest.

 

Old Navy, Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to open a 14,400 sq.ft. Old Navy store in OshKosh, WI. The space was formerly occupied by Levi’s/Dockers. Opening is slated for early 2006. Old Navy operates a chain of approximately 900 family clothing stores throughout North America, offering items under its own brand name at discounted prices. Products include men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and accessories. The chain plans to add about 200 stores by 2007 and has extended its brand to include maternity and women’s plus-size apparel, as well as accessories and personal care products.

 

Grill Concepts, Inc. (310-820-5559) is planning to open a 7,200 sq.ft. The Grill restaurant in Dallas, TX during the middle of next year. The site would be located adjacent to the Dallas Galleria. The restaurant will also feature a 1,000 sq.ft. patio. It will have combined seating for more than 250 guests and will offer an extensive wine list. Grill Concepts operates, licenses, and manages approximately 20 Daily Grill restaurants offering casual dining in a setting reminiscent of a classic American grill during the 1930s and 1940s. Located primarily in California, the restaurants feature such fare as chicken potpie, meatloaf and cobbler. Restaurants are also located in Washington, DC, Houston, TX; Portland, OR and Skokie, IL. Its licensed restaurants operate in shopping areas and hotels; one is located in Los Angeles International Airport. The Daily Grill concept is based on the company’s four upscale Grill on the Alley locations.

 

Carlson Cos., Inc. (763-212-1000) is planning to open a T.G.I. Friday’s restaurant at CenterPlace in Greeley, CO. Opening is slated for late spring 2006. The 5,100 sq.ft. restaurant will be located between the Outback Steak House and Red Robin along the U.S. 34 Bypass, east of 47th Avenue. Overall, the company is planning to open 50 T.G.I. Friday’s locations this year and 100 during the coming two years. Carlson’s restaurant empire includes the 750-unit T.G.I. Friday’s chain. The restaurants operates locations worldwide, including 40 outlets throughout the United Kingdom and 60 countries.

 

Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. (330-656-2600) is planning to open a Jo-Ann superstore at Park West Place, a center located at the intersection of Interstate 5 and Eight Mile Road in Stockton, FL. The store will occupy a space of 35,000 sq.ft. and is slated to open next month. The company currently operates 851 stores throughout 47 states. Of those locations, 114 are superstores. Jo-Ann Stores sells fabrics and sewing supplies, craft materials, decorating and floral items and seasonal goods. Most of the company’s stores, located mainly in strip shopping centers, operate under the Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts tradename.

 

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-1575) is planning to open 1,500 Starbucks locations this year and approximately 1,800 units next year. Starbucks operates and licenses more than 8,500 coffee shops throughout more than 30 countries. The shops offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as beans, coffee accessories, teas and CDs. Starbucks operates more than 5,200 of its shops in five countries, mostly in the U.S., while licensees operate more than 2,800 units, primarily in shopping centers and airports. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains in the U.S., with more than 100 shops. In addition, Starbucks markets its coffee through grocery stores and licenses its brand for other food and beverage products.
