Who's Opening & Where


Belk, Inc. (704-357-1000) is planning to open a 132,000 sq.ft. Belk store at The Avenue Murfreesboro, an 808,000 sq.ft. center located in Murfreesboro, TN. The company currently operates about 275 stores throughout approximately 15 states. Belk stores, located in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, primarily in the Carolinas and Georgia, offer mid-priced namebrand and private-label apparel, shoes, cosmetics, gifts, and home furnishings. Its stores usually anchor malls or shopping centers in small to medium-sized markets and target 35-to-54-year-old middle- and upper-income women. The Belk family runs the show and owns most of the company.

 

The TJX Cos., Inc. (508-390-1000) is planning to open a T.J. Maxx store in Pueblo, CO. The TJX Cos. operates seven retail chains, including the two largest off-price clothing retailers in the U.S., T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. T.J. Maxx sells namebrand family apparel, accessories, women’s shoes, domestics, giftware, and jewelry at discount prices at some 800 stores nationwide. Marshalls offers a full line of shoes and a broader selection of menswear through more than 700 stores. Its HomeGoods chain of 250-plus stores nationwide focuses entirely on home furnishings, while its more than 150 A.J. Wright clothing stores aim for lower-income shoppers.

 

La Senza Corp. (514-684-3666) is planning to continue its aggressive multi-year expansion of lingerie stores in Canada and internationally. In Canada, the company is opening more stores in power centers, increasing the size of many of its stores in regional malls and converting its Silk and Satin stores to the La Senza Express brand. The company specializes in selling intimates, loungewear and sleepwear targeted at women from 18 to 35 years of age. La Senza operates nearly 300 mostly mall-based stores in Canada and 20 other countries.

 

J.C. Penney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is planning to open as many as 175 stores nationally during the coming four years, with a focus on moving away from malls. The company currently operates more than 1,000 JCPenney department stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

 

Babies “R” Us (973-617-3500) is planning to open an average of 15 stores annually for the next five years. However, for 2006 the company is looking to open as many as 22 stores. The company, a division of the giant toy retailer Toys ‘’R’’ Us, currently operates approximately 230 stores across the U.S. and more than a dozen stores in Japan. It offers toys, clothing, and accessories for newborns and toddlers, as well as guest services such as a mother’s room and a special order department. Product offerings range from feeding, bathing, and potty-training supplies to baby furniture, strollers, car seats, and high chairs.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to expand its store in Burton, MI to a Wal*Mart Supercenter. The 85,000 sq.ft. expansion is expected to be complete by late April 2007. Wal*Mart currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

CBRL Group, Inc. (615-444-5533) is planning to open a Cracker Barrel restaurant at Winstead Park, a center located off Winstead Avenue in Rocky Mount, NC. Opening is slated for the end of the year. The company currently operates more than 530 Cracker Barrel Old Country Store restaurants throughout approximately 40 states. The restaurants are known for their country kitsch, rustic decor, and down-home cooking. The eateries offer mostly standard American fare, such as chicken, ham, and roast beef dishes; the restaurants are also popular breakfast spots. Each Cracker Barrel location features a retail area where patrons can buy hand-blown glassware, cast iron cookware, and woodcrafts, as well as jellies and old-fashioned candies. CBRL also owns about 60 and franchises about another 60 Logan’s Roadhouse restaurants in roughly 20 states.

 

International Dairy Queen, Inc. (952-830-0200) is planning to open a Dairy Queen restaurant just north of the former Hy-Vee store at the intersection of Fourth Street and Hamilton Boulevard in Sioux City, IA. The 70-seat restaurant will become the largest Dairy Queen in the metro area and the latest to use the company’s new design and expanded menu. The restaurant will include a drive-thru. The company is a leading franchiser of frozen treat stores, with more than 5,600 Dairy Queen quick-service restaurants popular for their ice cream treats, including Blizzards, sundaes, and cones. Many of the stores also serve burgers, fries, and other items. A small number of units are company-owned. In addition, IDQ franchises about 550 Orange Julius locations, which serve blended fruit drinks, and about 30 Karmelkorn stands offering a variety of popcorn treats. IDQ franchisees operate in the U.S., Canada, and 20 other countries.

 

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. (585-328-2550) is planning to open a 135,000 sq.ft. Wegman Food Market at the intersection of Route 26 and U.S. Route 15 in Frederick County, MD. The company also is planning to open two more locations throughout MD by 2009 in Landover and Annapolis. The supermarket chain owns approximately 70 stores. The supermarkets offer specialty shops such as huge in-store cafes, cheese shops with some 400 different varieties, and French-style pastry shops. The company is known for its gourmet cooking classes and an extensive employee-training program.

 

Thomas Pink, Ltd. (+44-20 7498 2202) plans to open its sixteenth Thomas Pink boutique this month in the King of Prussia Mall in King of Prussia, PA. The company is also looking at locations in CA and Las Vegas, NV and could possibly double its store count in the next five years. Thomas Pink designs, manufactures, and retails stylish upscale men’s, women’s, and boys’ clothing and their accoutrements in about 20 locations across the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

 

H&M Hennes & Mauritz (+46-8 796 55 00) plans to open 10 H&M stores next spring. In September, the company will open its first stores in the Middle East –in Dubai and Kuwait—and it plans to open its first stores in Greece and Slovakia during 2007. The chain will also enter China with two stores in 2007. The company designs cheap but chic clothing, mainly for men and women 18 to 45, children’s apparel, and its own brands of cosmetics. It operates about 1,200 stores in 22 countries with direct sales operations in selected areas.

 

Hibbett Sporting Goods, Inc. (205-942-4292) plans to open 80 to 85 Hibbett Sports stores in fiscal 2007, including 10 to 15 stores in the first quarter. Hibbett sells sporting equipment, footwear, and apparel through more than 550 stores in small to mid-sized markets in about 20 states, mainly in the southeast. Hibbett Sports stores, the firm’s flagship chain, are located primarily in malls and strip centers anchored by a Wal*Mart store.

 

Zpizza (949-719-3800) is planning to open as many as five pizzerias throughout the Austin, TX market by the end of the year. The restaurants offer pizza, sandwiches, salads and calzones, among other items. Most of the company’s locations are in CA.

 

Bass Pro Shops, Inc. (417-873-5000) is planning to open a store in Washington, PA. Opening is slated for 2011. Bass Pro Shops currently operates approximately 25 Outdoor World stores in 17 states. The stores cover about 280,000 sq.ft. The cavernous outlets sell boats, campers, equipment, and apparel for most outdoor activities and offer features such as archery ranges, fish tanks, snack bars, and video arcades.

 

Gap, Inc. (650-952-4400) will open seven Forth & Towne stores by this November. Three will open in Atlanta, GA, while Houston, TX and Seattle, WA will see two Forth & Towne stores each. Forth & Towne debuted in August 2005 and serves women over 35. Five stores opened last year and there will be 17 more opened by year’s end. In addition to the Atlanta, GA, Houston, TX and Seattle, WA stores, Forth & Towne will open in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Jose, CA. Existing stores are located in Chicago, IL and West Nyack, NY. Gap, Inc. runs more than 3,000 stores worldwide. Other chains include GapBody, GapKids, and babyGap.

 

Kohls Corp. (262-703-7000) plans to open a 96,000 sq.ft. Kohls store on 10 acres east of the Treasure Coast Square mall on U.S. 1 in Jensen Beach, FL. Construction is slated for early next year and the store should open 12 months after that. Kohl’s currently has 13 stores open in FL. The company’s plans to open 68 new stores this fall, with three of them in Brandon, Clearwater and Tampa, FL. The company operates 749 stores throughout 41 states and sells moderately priced name brand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares.
