bebe stores, Inc. (415-715-3900) is planning to open as many as 35 stores, expanding and renovating 16 existing stores and closing three stores. The number of planned new stores includes 20 bebe stores, 12 BEBE SPORT stores and three bebe outlet stores. bebe designs and sells contemporary women’s clothes and accessories under the bebe, BEBE SPORT and bebe O brands through approximately 225 stores in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. The company targets hip, body-conscious 21-to-35-year-olds. The company licenses its name for items such as eyewear and swimwear. Most of bebe’s products are developed in-house and produced by contract manufacturers.

 

VICORP Restaurants, Inc. (303-296-2121) is planning to open or acquire between 33 and 37 restaurants, predominantly under the Village Inn brand, this year. VICORP operates or franchises approximately 390 family-style, medium-priced restaurants throughout the U.S., mainly in AZ, CA, FL, the Rocky Mountain region and the upper Midwest. Its restaurant chains are Village Inn, with more than 200 locations, known primarily for its breakfast menu and pies, and Bakers Square, with about 150 locations, serving lunch and dinner and emphasizing fresh-baked pies. The company makes all its own pies through VICOM, its bakery production division.

 

Marburn Stores, Inc. (201-943-0222) is planning to open stores at the following locations throughout NJ: Hartford Corner Center in Delran; Hadley Center located on Stelton Road in South Plainfield and on Route 37 West in Toms River. The company also is planning to open a Marburn Curtains store on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station, NY.

 

Uno Restaurant Holdings Corp. (617-323-9200) is planning to open as many as 25 Uno Chicago Grill locations this year. The company operates and franchises approximately 200 Uno Chicago Grill restaurants known for its deep-dish, Chicago-style pizza. The casual-dining spots also serve pasta, steak, seafood and sandwiches. The company’s restaurants are located throughout approximately 30 states, primarily in the Northeast. About 120 of its locations are company-owned, and the rest are franchised.

 

Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) is planning to open approximately 475 Walgreens stores this year. Walgreen currently operates approximately 5,068 stores throughout 45 states and Puerto Rico, and has three mail order facilities. Prescription drugs account for nearly 64% of sales; the rest comes from general merchandise, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics and groceries. For added convenience, more than two-thirds of its stores offer drive-thru pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.

 

The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open four fuel/convenience stores during the first half of this year, and possibly as many as 300 locations by 2010. The chain’s concept is called Fuel. The stores will occupy spaces of 3,000 sq.ft. and will contain 14 fueling stations. The company currently operates approximately 1,940 home improvement stores throughout 50 U.S. states, Washington, DC, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. It targets the do-it-yourself and professional markets with a broad product assortment, up to 50,000 items, including lumber, floor and wall coverings, plumbing, gardening supplies, tools, paint, and even appliances. It’s the largest seller of garden products in North America and also runs more than 50 EXPO Design Center stores, which are showrooms featuring bath, kitchen, and lighting products.

 

Firehouse Restaurant Group, Inc. (904-886-8300) is planning to open a 2,100 sq.ft. Firehouse Subs shop at the intersection of Walton Way and 15th Street in Augusta, GA. Opening is slated for next month. During the coming several years, the company is looking to open 200 more locations. The company currently operates six locations in the area, including two in Martinez, one in North Augusta and one in Evans. Firehouse Restaurant Group operates and franchises approximately 200 Firehouse Subs sandwich shops throughout 12 southern states. The chain offers a variety of hot and cold sub-style sandwiches, as well as soups, salads and sides.

 

The Steak n Shake Co. (317-633-4100) is planning to open approximately 26 restaurants during this fiscal year. The company currently operates and franchises nearly 454 Steak n Shake restaurants throughout about 20 states in the Midwest and Southeast. The full-service chain’s menu features its hallmark steakburgers and milkshakes, as well as fries, chicken sandwiches, and chili. About 60 units are operated by franchisees, while the rest are company-owned. Open 24 hours a day, Steak n Shakes offer breakfast and late night dining, but lunch and dinner account for most of the chain’s sales. Each location serves its food on fine china.

 

Benihana, Inc. (305-593-0770) is planning to open a RA Sushi in Houston, TX and a teppenyaki restaurant in Short Hills, NJ. Also under development are restaurants in Coral Gables, FL and Miramar, FL and eight RA Sushi restaurants in Houston, TX; Lombard and Glenview, IL; Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Corona, Huntington Beach, Torrance and Tustin, CA. Benihana owns and operates approximately 60 Benihana and Benihana Grill locations throughout about 20 states and has some 20 franchised restaurants in a dozen other countries. In addition, the company operates more than 15 other restaurants doing business or under development as Haru, RA Sushi or Doraku.

 

Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-245-4000) is planning to open a Smokey Bones Barbeque and Grill restaurant at the intersection of Prince William Parkway and Crossing Place in Woodbridge, VA. The company currently operates 12 Red Lobster restaurants, 10 Olive Garden locations and two Smokey Bones restaurants throughout the Washington, DC area. Darden Restaurants, Inc. owns and operates over 1,400 Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Bahama Breeze, Smokey Bones Barbeque and Grill and Season 52 restaurants nationwide. Smokey Bones operates 71 restaurants.

 

PetsMart, Inc. (623-580-6100) is planning to open a PetsMart store at Village Plaza Shopping Center located in Clifton Park, NY. Opening is slated for the summer. The company currently operates more than 791 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The stores offer approximately 12,900 products, which range from scratching posts to iguana harnesses, and are sold under national brands and PetsMart’s own private labels. The retailer offers products through its PetsMart and State Line Tack (equine) web sites and through catalogs. Many stores offer in-store grooming and obedience training; veterinary services are available in some 430 shops through pet hospital operator, Medical Management International, known as Banfield.

 

Gap, Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to expand its Gap and Banana Republic brands into two southeast Asian markets. One of Gap, Inc.’s subsidiaries has signed agreements with wholly owned subsidiaries of FJ Benjamin Holdings Ltd. to operate Gap and Banana Republic stores throughout Singapore and Malaysia. The company is planning to open approximately 30 stores throughout Singapore and Malaysia by 2010, opening the first Gap location this Fall and the first Banana Republic store next year. Gap operates approximately 3,000 stores worldwide. Other chains include GapBody, GapKids and babyGap. All Gap clothing is private-label merchandise made specifically for the company.

 

Taco Del Mar Franchising Corp. (206-624-7060) is planning to open 200 Taco Del Mar locations nationwide this year. Taco Del Mar Franchising operates a chain of approximately 175 quick-service Mexican restaurants throughout more than 10 western states, AK and Canada. The fresh-Mex eateries specialize in tacos and burritos made with fresh beef, chicken, fish and veggie fillings. The company will open about 20 new units in western Canada, co-branded with Mac’s Convenience Stores. Expansion is also taking place on the eastern U.S. coast.

 

Houlihan’s Restaurants, Inc. (913-901-2500) is planning to open as many as three Houlihan’s restaurants in Jacksonville, FL next year. The company is currently looking to expand throughout the southeastern U.S., particularly into FL. Houlihan’s Restaurants also has a restaurant under construction in Orlando. Nationwide, the company is planning to open 50 restaurants during the coming two years, with plans to ultimately open 300 to 400 restaurants during the next decade. Of those, 65% will be franchised, while 35% will be owned and operated by the company. Houlihan’s Restaurants operates and franchises approximately 75 casual eateries in some 20 states and in Mexico, most of them operating under the Houlihan’s Restaurant & Bar name. The restaurants offer a variety of main dishes, including burgers, pasta, and steaks, as well as several appetizers and salads. The company also operates a small number of other dining concepts, including Bristol Bar & Grill, Darryl’s, Devon, Chequers, and J. Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks.

 

Broyhill Furniture Industries, Inc. (828-758-3111) is planning to open a 50,000 sq.ft. Broyhill Furniture Gallery store at Shoppes on Little Creek, a center located in Winston-Salem, NC. Opening is slated for the fall. The company’s product line includes bedroom, dining room, and home office furniture, as well as occasional tables and home entertainment systems. Broyhill specializes in upholstered goods and serves both residential and contract markets.

 

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-1575) is planning to open approximately 1,800 Starbucks stores on a global basis in fiscal 2006. Throughout the U.S., Starbucks plans to open approximately 700 company-operated locations and 600 licensed locations. In international markets, the company plans to open approximately 150 company-operated stores and 350 licensed stores. Starbucks operates and licenses more than 8,500 coffee shops throughout more than 30 countries. The shops offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as beans, coffee accessories, teas and CDs. Starbucks operates more than 5,200 of its shops throughout five countries, mostly in the US, while licensees operate more than 2,800 units, primarily in shopping centers and airports. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains in the U.S. with more than 100 shops. In addition, Starbucks markets its coffee through grocery stores and licenses its brand for other food and beverage products.

 

Cinemark, Inc. (972-665-1000) is planning to open a 14-screen, 46,000 sq.ft. Cinemark movie theater at Southpark Meadows, a center located in South Austin, TX. The company currently operates more than 3,200 screens in more than 300 theaters throughout the U.S. and several other countries, mostly in Latin America. Cinemark operates multiplex theaters in smaller cities and suburban areas of major metropolitan markets. Some larger theaters operate under the Tinseltown name, while others are discount theaters showing no first-run films.

 

Granite City Food & Brewery Ltd. (952-525-2070) is planning to open a Granite City Food & Brewery restaurant located in Olathe, KS. Granite City Food & Brewery operates brewpubs in St. Cloud, Maple Grove and Eagan, MN; Sioux Falls, SD; Fargo, ND; West Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport, IA; Lincoln, NE; Wichita and Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO. The restaurants offer a variety of handcrafted beers that are brewed on-site. The menu features chicken and steak, as well as appetizers, burgers, salads and sandwiches.

 

The Fresh Market, Inc. (336-272-1338) is planning to open three Fresh Market stores in the first quarter of this year. The first of the three stores will open in Bonita Springs, FL, while the other locations will be in the Buckhead section of Atlanta, GA and in Richmond, VA. Fresh Market stores typically occupy spaces of 20,000 sq.ft. and the emphasis is on fresh food items. The stores also stock coffee, candy, bulk items and a limited selection of prepared foods, such as gourmet pizza and sushi. The company currently operates 56 full-service upscale specialty supermarkets throughout 12 U.S. states. Overall, the chain plans to open eight to 10 stores per year.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open two more Neighborhood Market stores in the Orlando, FL area. The first is slated to open in east Orange County this month. Neighborhood Markets sell traditional grocery fare such as fresh produce and meats. The stores also offer amenities including a staffed deli, drive-thru pharmacy and a liquor department with a separate entrance. Nationwide, the company is planning to open between 550 to 600 Wal*Mart stores during the coming fiscal year, including 270 to 280 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations and 220 to 230 international retail outlets. The company also is moving towards opening retail banking units in its stores. Wal*Mart also is planning to open 15 to 20 Neighborhood Market locations and 30 to 40 Sam’s Club warehouse stores. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

Papa John’s International, Inc. (502-261-7272) is planning to open 250 restaurants throughout China during the coming five years. The company currently operates approximately 2,926 pizzerias across the U.S. and in 22 international markets. Its restaurants offer many pizza styles and topping choices, as well as a few specialty pies such as The Works and All the Meats. Papa John’s locations typically offer delivery and carry-out service only. In addition to its signature brand, the company also franchises about 120 Perfect Pizza restaurants throughout the United Kingdom. Papa John’s owns and operates about 20% of its locations.

 

JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is planning to open a 98,840 sq.ft. JCPenney store in Tech Center Ridge located at the intersection of Parmer Lane and Interstate 35 in North Austin, TX. The company also is looking to open a similar store at Southpark Meadows located at the intersection of Interstate 35 and Slaughter Lane in South Austin, TX. The company currently operates more than 1,000 JCPenney department stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
