Hat World Corp. (317-334-9428) opened a Lids Kids at the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis, IN. The company will open other Lids Kids locations in Greenwood and Mishawaka, IN this year. The store is a new concept from the company that has run Lids stores for adults. The largely mall-based retailer specializes in caps featuring licensed logos of professional (MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL) and college sports teams. With about 640 stores in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada, Hat World is the largest licensed headwear company in the U.S. In 2001, Hat World acquired bankrupt rival Lids and tripled in size. Stores and Web sites operate under both names.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Collier Boulevard in South Naples, FL. The company currently operates more than 6,300 stores, including some 1,200 discount stores, 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenters stores in the U.S. and ASDA in the United Kingdom, and 565 Sams Club stores. Nearly two-thirds of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the number one retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns a majority stake in Japanese retailer SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

Designs of the Interior (847-713-2622) is planning to open 15 to 20 DOTI stores annually, on average, with hopes of having between 200 and 250 stores throughout the country within the next 10 years. The company currently has 17 stores operating nationwide, with eight in development. New locations include Glendale, AZ; Paradise Valley, AZ; Manhattan Beach, CA; Thousand Oaks, CA; Boulder, CO; Newton, MA; Chesterfield, MO; Cincinnati, OH and West Houston, TX.

 

Dylans Candy Bar (888-395-2676) is opening a 15,000 sq.ft. store at 1011 Third Avenue in New York, NY. The company  also is planning to open stores in Los Angeles, CA, Las Vegas, NV and SoHo in NY. 

 

H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (210-938-8000) is opening an H-E-B Plus store at the intersection of Loop 1604 and Potranco Road in San Antonio, TX next month. Three more H-E-B Plus stores are also planned to open in San Antonio, TX during 2008, with one at the former McCreless Mall, one at the former Westlakes Mall and one at the intersection of Loop 1604 and Evans Road. The company operates H-E-B Plus stores in Austin, Waco, San Juan and Corpus Christi, TX. H-E-B owns more than 300 supermarkets, including a growing number of large gourmet Central Market stores in major metropolitan areas and more than 80 smaller Pantry Foods stores, often in more rural areas. H-E-B also has 20-plus upscale and discount stores in Mexico. H-E-B processes some of its own bread, dairy products, meat, and tortillas. The company also recently launched Mi Tienda, a supermarket format catering to Hispanic customers.

 

Foot Solutions (866-338-2597) opened its 200th store last month in Victoria, Australia. The company is also planning to open an additional 20 stores within the area. In the U.S., the company is currently opening four to six stores per month and has commitments from four other countries for continued international expansion. Using medical computer technology and a scientific 10-step fitting process, Foot Solutions scan customers’ feet and make custom, accommodative, comfort-foot inserts, as well as custom orthotics. The stores carry a line of shoes designed to fit specific-shaped feet.

 

Elephant Pharmacy (510-486-2616) is planning to open a pharmacy in Los Altos, CA this month, as well as three more stores through the end of 2007, with one slated to open in Walnut Creek, CA in Spring 2007. The company currently operates locations in Berkely and San Rafael, CA.

 

Home Depot of Canada, Inc. (416-609-0852) is planning to open 20 Home Depot stores this year. Home Depot of Canada operates nearly 143 giant warehouse stores in 10 provinces. Home Depot of Canada stores stock, on average, 40,000 to 50,000 kinds of building materials, hardware, lawn and garden products, home improvement supplies and appliances.

 

PETCO Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. (858-453-7845) will open a PETCO store at Glenn Square in Mountain View, AK. The company runs about 780 stores in 49 states and in Washington, DC. Its 15,000 sq.ft. superstores carry some 10,000 pet-related items, including premium cat and dog foods, collars and leashes, grooming products, toys and animal habitats. The stores also offer grooming, obedience training, and vet services, and sponsor pet adoption for cats and dogs with local animal-welfare organizations. Its products are also available through its company Web site.

 

Ross Stores, Inc. (925-965-4400) will acquire 46 Albertsons sites in AZ, CA, CO, FL, OK and TX. The company plans to incorporate these properties into its 2007 expansion program for Ross Dress For Less and dd’s DISCOUNTS. Openings are slated to begin as early as March 2007. The company currently operates 766 Ross Dress For Less stores in 27 states and Guam and 26 dd’s DISCOUNTS locations in CA. Ross Dress For Less offers first-quality, in-season, name brand and designer apparel, accessories, footwear and home fashions. dd’s DISCOUNTS features a more moderately priced assortment of the same goods.

 

Sunflowers Farmers Market (505-890-7900) will open a store at The Village Shopping Center in Boulder, CO. The store will replace the United Artists movie theater location early next year. The company currently operates 11 markets throughout Gilbert, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and Tucson, AZ, Denver and Fort Collins, CO, Albuquerque, NM and Las Vegas, NV.

 

Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (908-688-0888) opened 11 Bed Bath & Beyond stores during the quarter, ending the period with 762 locations. The company expects to open 75 Bed Bath & Beyond stores for the year and also plans to renovate a number of existing stores. The company is the number one superstore domestics retailer in the U.S., with more than 740 Bed Bath & Beyond stores in 46 states and Puerto Rico. The stores’ floor-to-ceiling shelves stock better-quality goods in two main categories: domestics (bed linens, bathroom and kitchen items) and home furnishings (cookware and cutlery, small household appliances, picture frames and more). New superstore openings are projected at 70 or more per year.

 

Lowes Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is planning to open a Lowes Home Improvement store at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Collier Boulevard in South Naples, FL. Lowe’s operates more than 1,250 superstores in 49 states and has announced plans to expand into Canada in 2007. The company’s stores sell about 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies and tools, as well as appliances and furniture.

 

Bristol Farms (310-233-4700) opened its first store in San Francisco, CA which is its first in northern CA and its first inside a mall, on the concourse level of the city’s new Westfield San Francisco Centre. The space is located in between a new five-story Bloomingdale’s and a multi-story Nordstrom. The 30,000 sq.ft. store is the chain’s 14th location in the state. Bristol Farms operates more than a dozen upscale specialty supermarkets in CA’s Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties. Smaller than traditional supermarkets, more than two-thirds of the company’s sales come from fresh products.

 

Steve & Barrys, LLC (516-829-4730) will open a Steve & Barrys University Sportswear store at the Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke, VA this month. The store will take over the former second floor of T.J. Maxx and will stretch into a former food court space at the mall. The company, which sells every item in its stores for $19.99 or less, operates about 140 units nationwide and plans to expand to 200 locations by the end of 2006. Stores range from 50,000 sq.ft. to over 100,000 sq. ft. The firm sources its merchandise (T-shirts, button-down shirts, varsity jackets, sweatpants, tank tops, backpacks) from vendors in the U.S., Canada, Central America, India, Mexico and Pakistan.

 

Sonic Corp. (405-225-5000) will open a 1,557 sq.ft. Sonic drive-in restaurant in front of a Lowes Home Improvement store on Rutgers Street in Northwest Roanoke, VA, an area sandwiched between the Towne Shopping Center and Crossroads Mall. The company is also planning to open a Sonic near a Lowe’s Home Improvement in Roanoke County, VA off of U.S. 460. Sonic operates about 575 restaurants and franchises more than 2,465 locations in 29 states, primarily in the south and southwest. The eateries offer such items as hamburgers, extra-long cheese coney dogs, tater tots, and cherry limeades. Customers order via intercom from a menu board located in each parking space (there are about 30 spaces per unit) and carhops deliver the food. Some locations (about 125) also offer dine-in seating and drive-through service. Sonic also has locations in Mexico.

 

BI-LO, LLC (864-234-1600) is opening a BI-LO supermarket on S.C. 24 in Anderson County, SC. The store would likely replace the BI-LO in the Lakeside Shopping Center. BI-LO operates 300-plus supermarkets in GA, NC, SC, and TN. Many of BI-LO’s supermarkets offer pharmacies and some have Starbucks Café kiosks. Brands include national names, the BI-LO private-label banner, Finast health and beauty products, Southern Hearth Bakery items, and Vinces deli meats and meals-to-go.

 

Showcolate Fondue Express (877-757-0944) will open eight Showcolate franchises, including one at the Stonebriar Mall in Frisco, TX. The company currently operates a kiosk in the Town East Mall in Mesquite, TX and a kiosk in the North Star Mall in San Antonio, TX. The company also operates locations throughout Brazil and Portugal. Showcolate franchises operate from their state-of-the-art kiosks, which feature chocolate-spinning wheels. This main feature displays a cascading flow of chocolate rotating on five spinning wheels behind a glass window. Visible dark, milk and white chocolates circulate as they are prepared for the fondue. Designed for malls, Showcolate has more than 100 locations worldwide that sell over 20 products.

 

lululemon athletica (877-263-9300) will team up with Descente Ltd. to help it set up 20 stores in Japan by 2010. The company is also planning to open more stores in Asia and Europe, and plans to open at least 200 stores nationwide over the next several years. lululemon athletica is a yoga inspired athletic apparel company. The company operates 40 plus stores throughout Canada, Japan, Australia and CA, CO, FL, IL, MA, NY, OR, WA and Washington, DC.

 

The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open 57 Home Depot stores in Mexico this year. The company operates more than 2,000 stores nationwide and throughout Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The company targets the do-it-yourself and professional markets with a broad product assortment.

 

Staples, Inc. (508-253-5000) is planning to open a 22,590 sq.ft. Staples store at the Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke, VA. Opening is slated for early 2007. Staples is the number one office supply superstore operator in the U.S. It sells office products, furniture, computers, and other supplies through its chain of more than 1,800 Staples and Staples Express stores in the U.S. and Canada and some 20 other countries. In addition to its retail outlets, Staples sells office products through the Internet and through its catalog and direct sales operations, including subsidiary Quill Corp. Staples also provides document management and copying services through its retail chain. The company targets small businesses and home office professionals, as well as consumers.

 

Forever 21, Inc. (213-741-5100) is planning to open a Forever 21 store in Gainesville, FL. The company operates about 390 mainly mall-based stores in the U.S. and Canada under the Forever 21, Forever XXI, and For Love 21 banners. The stores offer cheap and chic fashions and accessories for women and junior girls. Forever XXI stores are larger than classic Forever 21 shops and offer men’s and women’s fashions, as well as lingerie, footwear, cosmetic items, and other accessories.

 

National Stores, Inc. (310-324-9962) will open a Fallas Paredes store at the Fox Plaza Shopping Plaza in El Paso, TX, replacing JCPenney’s former spot. Burger King and El Pollo will join Fallas Paredes as other stores that will open before the year’s end. The company operates Fallas Paredes stores throughout AZ, CA, NM, NV and TX.

 

W.S. Badcock Corp. (800-223-2625) opened a Badcocks Home Now store in the Clearlake Square Plaza off Clearlake Road in Cocoa, FL. This is Badcock’s third rent-to-own operation, with another being in Tampa, FL. The company plans to open more Home Now operations. W.S. Badcock Corp. currently operates 317 Home Furniture & More stores, including five in Brevard County, FL. About 85% of the company’s furniture stores are owned and operated by independent dealers.

 

Extreme Pita (905-820-7887) will open its first urban restaurant this month in the heart of New York, NY. The Manhattan site is part of an aggressive expansion plan that will see the company double the number of locations it opens next year, including more restaurants in the Toronto area of Canada. Extreme Pita is a Canada-based fast-food chain. The company boasts more than 150 units throughout Canada and the U.S. Extreme Pita serves pita sandwiches, salads, and pizza-style “flat-baked” pitas. The chain considers these types of products to be relatively healthy compared to traditional fast-food fare. Available ingredients include fresh vegetables, cheeses, meats and vegetarian options such as falafel and hummus.

 

Target Corp. (612-304-6073) will open a 135,000 sq.ft. Target store at the East River Plaza in New York, NY during 2008, which is also cotenanted by Home Depot. The nation’s number two discount chain now operates about 1,440 Target and SuperTarget stores in 47 states. Target and its cousins, including SuperTarget, which sells groceries, and Target Greatland, have carved out a niche by offering more upscale, fashion-forward merchandise. Target also owns apparel supplier The Associated Merchandising Corp. and issues Target Visa and its proprietary Target Card.
