Who's Opening & Where


JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is planning to open an 115,000 sq.ft. department store at the Village at Fairview located in Fairview, TX. The one million sq.ft. retail center will be located on 200 acres at the intersection of Stacy Road and U.S. 75 in Collin County, TX and will be anchored by Barnes & Noble, Dillards, Macy’s and The Container Store. The center will also feature 500,000 sq.ft. of specialty shops and restaurants, in addition to a movie theater. The project will also include 200,000 sq.ft. of office space, over 1,000 residential units, a 250-room hotel and a 70,000 sq.ft. conference center. The department store will feature family apparel, shoes, furniture and home accessories. JCPenney plans to open 50 locations by 2009. The company is also planning to open a 104,000 sq.ft. store at The Shoppes at Rio Grande Valley, a 70-acre project located at the intersection of Expressway 281 and Trenton Road in Edinburgh, TX.

Grill Concepts, Inc. (310-820-5559) operates under the trade names The Grill on the Alley and Daily Grill. The company is planning to open three Daily Grill restaurants throughout Seattle, WA and Austin, TX during the summer and in Dallas, TX during the fall of 2008. Letters of intent have been signed for five additional locations scheduled to open by the end of 2008. Its most recent opening was last month in Memphis, TN. The chain of upscale, casual and fine dining restaurants currently operates five The Grill on the Alley branded locations throughout Beverly Hills, Hollywood and San Jose, CA; Chicago, IL and Dallas, TX in addition to 20 Daily Grill locations throughout northern and southern CA; Skokie, IL; Portland, OR; Houston, TX and Washington, DC.

Grocery Outlet (510-845-1999) is planning to open a supermarket on Lake Tahoe Boulevard at the site of the 30,000 sq.ft. former Longs Drugs in South Lake Tahoe, NV. The supermarkets offer perishables, non-perishables and frozen groceries, deli items as well as general merchandise including housewares, toys and gifts. The company currently operates 127 locations.


United Supermarkets
(806-791-0220) is planning to expand its Market Street brand with a location scheduled to open at the intersection of Eldorado Parkway and Dallas North Tollway in Frisco, TX during 2008. An additional location is currently under construction in Allen, TX. The stores will feature a fuel station and drive-thru pharmacy.

Zaxby’s (706-353-8107) is planning to open a restaurant at the 30,000 sq.ft. French Farms Pavilion, a seven-acre project, on U.S. 72 across from a Wal*Mart Supercenter in Athens, AL. The chain of fast casual dining restaurants specialize in buffalo chicken wings, fried and grilled chicken tenders, specialty salads and signature side dishes and currently operate 350 locations nationwide. Maurice’s, Inc. (218-727-8431) is planning to open a location at the French Farms Pavilion in Athens, AL during September. The young men’s and women’s apparel shop will anchor the center. The company currently operates 550 locations nationwide. GameStop (817-424-2000) is also planning to open a store at the French Farms Pavilion. The video game and entertainment software retailer currently operates 4,592 locations nationwide in 38 states and is planning to open 500 to 550 stores worldwide this year. Sally Beauty will also cotenant the center.

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) is negotiating to open a department store at the Tramonto Marketplace located at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Carefree Highway in Tramonto, AZ. The center is scheduled to have some stores open by November and to be cotenanted by Bed Bath & Beyond, Chase Bank, Chili’s, Staples and Taco Bell. The company is also planning to open a 98,000 sq.ft. store at the San Gorgonio Village shopping center located at the intersection of First Street and Second Street in Beaumont, CA. The 225,000 sq.ft. center will be situated on 23 acres and is scheduled to open during late fall or early spring 2008. Kohl’s will anchor the center which will be cotenanted by Marshall’s, Famous Footwear, Big Five Sporting Goods, Circuit City, fast food restaurants, a bank and an indoor-outdoor food court with a patio. In addition, the company has plans to open a 68,000 sq.ft. store at The Highlands in Wheeling, OH during October. Cotenants include Books-A-Million, JCPenney, Olive Garden, T.J. Maxx and Verizon Wireless in addition to area retailers Target and Wal*Mart. Kohl’s offers family apparel, shoes, accessories, small electronics, bedding, luggage and general merchandise.

Fuddruckers, Inc. (512-891-1300) is planning to open a fast-casual restaurant at the Village Green Shopping Center, located on East Market Street in York, PA. The 5,000 sq.ft. location is slated to open during the spring and will feature a bakery and a creamery to serve desserts, in addition to serving hamburgers, chicken, fish and salads. The company operates more than 230 restaurants in 36 states and Canada.

Benihana, Inc. (305-593-0770) is planning to open two RA Sushi Bar Japanese restaurants during 2008; one location is scheduled to open in Harbor East, a mixed-use development located on I-83 on the harbor promenade in Baltimore, MD; the second restaurant is scheduled to open at The Shops of Legacy, located at the intersection of Legacy Drive and Dallas North Parkway in Plano, TX. The company currently operates 79 locations nationwide, including 59 Benihana teppanyaki restaurants, seven Haru sushi restaurants and 13 RA Sushi Bar locations. The company currently has 14 restaurants in development, including four Benihana teppanyaki locations, two Haru locations and eight RA Sushi locations. The company also has 17 franchised Benihana teppanyaki locations operating nationwide and in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Basha’s (480-895-9350) is planning to open five supermarkets during the coming months, with openings scheduled in Chandler, Phoenix and Tucson, AZ. The company currently operates 153 locations under the brand names Basha’s, AJ’s Fine Foods and Food City. The company is also planning to open its Ike’s Farmer’s Market concept, offering organic food items, throughout Phoenix and Tucson, AZ and is debuting a scaled down version of AJ’s Fine Foods at the Promenade at Fulton Ranch in Chandler, AZ. The company also acquired two Albertson’s grocery store locations, with one location in Phoenix, AZ to become a Food City and another location in Gilbert, AZ to become a Basha’s. The supermarkets offer a variety of grocery items in addition to a pharmacy.

Hibbett Sports (205-942-4292) is planning to open a sporting goods store at the Belton Marketplace, located at the intersection of State Road 58 and Mullen Road in Belton, MO, a suburb of Kansas City. The 58,000 sq.ft. center is to be situated on 11 acres and will contain one single-story, 40,000 sq.ft. retail building along with two smaller outparcel buildings. The center is to be tenanted by Office Depot, Starbucks and Verizon Wireless and is scheduled for completion during the fall. The company is planning to open an additional 92 to 100 stores during the year.

Native New Yorker (866-599-9649) is planning to open restaurants throughout NM, with four openings scheduled in Albuquerque and one in Rio Rancho. The company is planning to open 10 locations annually and currently operates 17 locations throughout AZ. The franchised concept may also expand in CA, IN and El Paso, TX.

Signs Now (941-373-1958) is planning to open 15 to 20 franchised locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, with a focus on Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC. The stores offer such services as digital imaging for outdoor and indoor signage, exhibit and vehicle graphics, magnetic signs, banners, window graphics, ADA signage and other visual communications tools. The company currently operates 230 franchise locations nationwide and in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Giant Eagle (412-963-6200) is expanding its Market District concept. The company plans to open up to four additional supermarkets throughout Pittsburgh, PA. The gourmet supermarkets carry between 5,000 and 6,000 specialty products and offer a drive-thru pharmacy. The first Market District occupies approximately 90,000 sq.ft. The company is also test-marketing a 13,000 sq.ft. grocery hybrid in Hamar Township, PA. The hybrid, trading as Giant Eagle Express combines a small grocery presence with gas pumps and a drive-thru pharmacy and features produce, meat, deli items and a prepared foods department in addition to a full-service bakery.

Publix Supermarkets, Inc. (800-242-1227) is planning to open a 46,000 sq.ft. Publix supermarket at the Crosscreek Village in St. Cloud, FL. The 81,000 sq.ft. center is scheduled to open during 2008. The company is also planning to relocate a supermarket at the Southeast Plaza located on Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven, FL to the east end of the center, at the former site of the Continental Theater. The relocated supermarket will occupy a space of 39,000 sq.ft. and is scheduled for completion during the end of 2008. The 130,000 sq.ft. center is cotenanted by Craft Depot, Dollar Tree, DiMaggio’s, Executive Cleaners, Grand China Buffet, Haven Comfort Shoes, H & R Block, Nikki Nails, Southeast Beauty Salon and Verizon Wireless.

Goddard Systems, Inc. (800-463-3273) is planning to open 50 locations during the year. The company occupies spaces of 8,000 sq.ft. to 10,000 sq.ft. on a land area of 1.25 acres. The child-care development centers require a 10-year lease with two, five-year options for locations near residential areas, office/corporate campuses and on retail pad sites. The company will consider build-to-suit and acquisition opportunities.

WinCo Foods (208-672-2072) is planning to open a 94,000 sq.ft. supermarket in phase two of the Jess Ranch Marketplace in Apple Valley, CA. Cotenants for the second phase include an 80,000 sq.ft. Mervyns, Bank of America, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Famous Footwear, Fashion Bug, Kirkland’s, Lane Bryant, Payless ShoeSource, PetSmart and Rite Aid. The center is currently under construction and its opening is slated for fall. Phase three is located at the intersection of Bear Valley Road and Apple Valley Road and is slated for groundbreaking later this year. The center, featuring 700,000 sq.ft. of retail, restaurants and entertainment is to be tenanted by Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Cinemark Theater, Red Robin, Ulta and 24 Hour Fitness and will be adjacent to Target.

Andy’s Cheesesteaks and Cheeseburgers (919-635-0902) recently opened a restaurant on East Street in Pittsboro, NC. The fast-casual restaurants offer made-to-order cheesesteaks and burgers, milkshakes and fresh lemonade served in a 1950s style diner atmosphere. The company currently operates 100 locations throughout NC with further expansion planned in the state.

Books-A-Million, Inc. (205-942-3737) is planning to open a 15,000 sq.ft. Books-A-Million store at the Colonial Promenade Fultondale, located at the intersection of Interstate 65 and Walker Chapel Road in Fultondale, AL.  The center is currently under construction, and is slated for completion during Spring 2008 and is to be tenanted by Best Buy, JCPenney, Ross Dress for Less and Target.  The company currently operates 200 locations nationwide and has plans for an additional location at the Colonial Pinnacle Craft Farms in Gulf Shores, AL.

Hennes & Mauritz, LP (212-564-9922) is planning to open an H&M store in Las Vegas, NV at the Aladdin’s Desert Passage this fall and plans to open more locations in the area. The company currently operates 25 stores throughout the U.S., but the Las Vegas store is its first location between Los Angeles, CA and Minneapolis, MN. The chain of ladies apparel stores sells popular-prized fashion and operates three locations in Orange County, CA and one in Los Angeles. Worldwide, there are 1,300 H&M stores in 24 countries.

Gander Mountain Co. (651-325-4300) is planning to open 13 Gander Mountain stores during the year.  The company offers hunting, fishing, camping, boating, marine and outdoor lifestyle products and services and has expanded its merchandise mix to include an assortment of outdoor equipment, technical apparel and footwear as well as gunsmith, archery, ATV and marine services.  The stores feature national, regional and local brands in addition to private labels.  The company currently operates 105 locations throughout 22 states.

Church’s Chicken (770-350-3800) is planning to open 15 company-owned restaurants and 102 franchised restaurants during the year. The company currently operates 245 corporate locations and 1,365 franchised units worldwide.

Calvin Klein, Ltd. (212-719-2600) is planning to open retail locations. The company intends to open five stores during the year on a test basis at malls in major cities throughout the U.S. The shops will occupy spaces of 10,000 sq.ft. and be decorated in mahogany, stone and blackened metal and sell men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, watches and fragrances. The company has plans for an additional five locations during 2008 with a goal of operating 100 stores nationwide and possibly in Canada.

is planning to open Wellington Pet Care shops during the year. The company prefers locations situated on one acre to accommodate an 11,000 sq.ft. building and requires 10-year leases with two, five-year options. Preferred sites are located near industrial, agricultural, office/corporate campuses and rural areas.

Ann Taylor Loft (800-342-5266) is planning to open a store at The Promenade at Lyons located at the intersection of Lyons Road and Wiles Road in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Situated on 23-acres, the upscale mixed-use project will feature 250,000 sq.ft. of retail and restaurants, up to 125,000 sq.ft. of office space and up to 450 residential units. Cotenants include Banana Republic, Brighton, Chico’s, Coldwater Creek, Jos. A. Bank, Limited Too, New York & Co., SOMA, Starbucks, Talbots and White House/Black Market. Construction is slated to commence this summer.

Fatburger (310-319-1850) plans to open two franchised restaurants throughout Long Island, NY during the year.

Wal*Mart (800-925-6278) is planning to open a 185,000 sq.ft. supercenter in Eufaula, AL during spring 2008. The center will feature an expansive grocery selection, tire and lube express center along with a garden center. The company is also planning to open a 184,000 sq.ft. supercenter on South Grand Avenue in Fowlerville, MI. The 24-hour store will offer groceries, clothing, a nursery, tire and lube center and a pharmacy. Opening for the store could be as early as the first quarter of 2008.

Cabela’s (308-254-5505) is planning to open a 130,000 sq.ft. store at the The Gateway at Scarborough located on Haigis Parkway in Scarborough, ME. The store offers a wide variety of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear. Opening is slated for May 2008. The 438,000 sq.ft. mixed-use development will be situated on 74 acres and will include 68,500 sq.ft. of retail space, three 6,000 sq.ft. freestanding restaurants, a 4,000 sq.ft. bank, a 200-room hotel and 80,000 sq.ft. of professional office space.

Home Depot (770-433-8211) is planning to open a home improvement store in New Bedford, MA.

BJ’s Wholesale Club (508-651-7400) is planning to open eight to 10 locations throughout its existing markets during the year. The discount warehouse centers offer fresh produce, choice meats, baked goods, gourmet items, imported cheese, apparel, books, electronics, housewares and home goods. The company currently operates 160 locations throughout the eastern region.

The Container Store (888-266-8246) is planning to open three locations this year and six locations during 2008. The company operates 38 locations nationwide, with stores averaging 25,000 sq.ft. and featuring 10,000 products to conserve space. The store layout is divided into lifestyle sections marked with brightly colored banners such as Closet, Kitchen, Office and Laundry.

Old Navy (650-952-4400) is planning to open a 16,500 sq.ft. store at the 900,000 sq.ft. Jefferson Mall located on Outer Loop in Louisville, KY during August.  Linens ‘N Things (866-568-7378) is also planning
to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at the mall during 2008.

Patty Burger (847-609-8500) is planning to open three to four restaurants this year in the Chicago, IL market with plans for 100 locations operating throughout the Midwest region by 2012. The restaurants offer a limited menu of made-to-order burgers, fries, chili, shakes and breakfast sandwiches and feature a retro-style and clean appearance, including cement floors, stainless steel and polka-dotted walls and modern orange light fixtures. The company currently operates locations in Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI.

Movie Tavern (214-751-8277) is planning open a location at the High Street mixed-use center located at the intersection of Richmond Road and Ironbound Road in Williamsburg, VA. The theater will feature eight screens and offer dining. The initial phase of the mixed-use project will include 246 apartments, 53 townhouses and 53 condominiums. In addition, the project will also include 230,000 sq.ft. of retail and office space, which is scheduled to open during spring 2008.

Nathan’s Famous (978-232-5600) is planning to open eight locations throughout Long Island, NY.

Sprinkles Cupcakes (214-369-0004) opened a location at the Plaza at Preston Center located on Villanova Drive in Dallas, TX. The boutiques offer more than 20 flavors of cupcakes, including chai latte, coconut, ginger lemon and peanut butter chip. The company currently operates locations in Beverly Hills and Newport Beach, CA; with an additional location scheduled to open in Phoenix, AZ during the summer. Future expansion will most likely take place in Denver, CO; Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Charlotte, NC and Houston, TX.

Lowe’s Home Improvement (800-445-6937) is planning to open a 171,069 sq.ft. store at the Rochester Shoppes, located at the intersection of Washington Street and Spaulding Turnpike in Rochester, NH. Cotenants include a 68,639 sq.ft. Kohl’s, Famous Footwear, Fashion Bug, Maurices and Starbucks. The company is also planning to open a 139,410 sq.ft. store at a 287,613 sq.ft. center, to be situated on 23 acres, located at the intersection of Moreno Beach Drive and Alessandro Boulevard in Moreno Valley, CA.

Martinizing Dry Cleaning (800-827-0207) is planning to open 13 locations throughout Orlando, FL during the next three years.  The dry cleaning chain uses eco-friendly cleaning products and processes. Currently, approximately 175 franchisees operate 600 stores throughout the U.S. and in Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Germany, Japan, Indonesia and U.S. territories. The company is also looking to expand in Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh, NC.

Cuba Libre (215-922-3200) is planning to open two to four restaurants during 2008. The chain of Cuban-style restaurants currently operates locations in the Old City section of Philadelphia, PA and at the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ. The company is looking into possible expansion in Reno, NV and the Meadowlands in Secaucus, NJ.

Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. (330-656-2600) is planning to open six stores this year, remodel 25 stores and close 20 stores. The stores offer a variety of items, including apparel and quilting fabrics, home décor, seasonal items, floral and craft products along with custom framing. The company currently operates 628 stores and 173 superstores in 47 states nationwide.

Carvel (860-257-4448) has plans to open three locations throughout Long Island, NY during the year.

Conns (409-832-1696) is planning to open six to eight stores during the coming year. The 62-unit chain offers home appliances, consumer electronics and furniture. Its most recent openings took place in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston and San Antonio, TX markets.

Marco’s Pizza (800-262-7267) is planning to open a 1,600 sq.ft. restaurant in New Port Richey, FL. The company, offering pizza, hot sub sandwiches and salads, currently operates 150 locations and plans to open 10 locations throughout FL.

El Pollo Loco (949-399-2000) is planning to open 30 restaurants during 2007 and 49 restaurants during 2008, mainly through franchising. The chain of fast food chicken restaurants currently operates 208 franchised units and 152 company-owned locations.

The Spinx Co. (864-233-5421) is planning to open a 3,000 sq.ft. convenience store, with 10 fueling stations on Pine Street in Converse Heights, SC. The company currently operates 21 stores throughout Greenville, SC and is planning additional locations in Boiling Springs, Columbia and Spartanburg, SC during the year.

Saladworks (610-825-3080) is planning to open a restaurant near the Broadway Mall in Hicksville, NY later this year. The company, serving made-to-order salads, soups, sandwiches and wraps, is planning to open 30 locations in the Long Island, NY market during the next five years.

Smooth Solutions Laser Hair Removal L.P. (210-764-2800) is planning to open a franchised location on Burnet Road in Austin, TX. The company plans additional locations throughout Austin during the next several years and currently operates six company-owned units in TX. The centers specialize in laser hair removal treatments.

Max & Erma’s (614-431-5800) is planning to open 10 locations during the year. The casual dining restaurants have recently undergone remodeling, and the new locations will feature additional seating, along with a lighter and brighter interior with more vibrant colors and fixtures, including slate covered floors, in addition to a lounge area outfitted with oversized chairs and cocktail tables.

Fitness Together (877-663-0880) is planning to open five franchised locations throughout central FL. The fitness and personal-training centers have openings scheduled in Winter Park and Baldwin Park.

 
Chabill’s Tire Traxx (985-380-8235) opened its 13th location at a site in Mathews, LA during February. The company is planning to open an additional location in southern LA. The retail tire dealer, sells and services such brands as Michelin, BF Goodrich, Uniroyal, Cooper, Goodyear and Kelly.

Longs Drug Stores (925-937-1170) is planning to open or relocate 25 to 30 drug stores during fiscal 2008. The company offers an assortment of merchandise focusing on health, beauty and convenience items and currently operates 509 locations throughout the western states and in HI.

Stein Mart (904-346-1500) is planning to open 15 to 20 locations during the year. The stores carry a variety of men’s and women’s apparel, accessories and home décor items.

Dunkin’ Donuts (781-737-3000) is planning to open 70 locations throughout Memphis, TN during the next seven years. The company, serving coffee, lattes, smoothies, donuts, bagels and muffins, is planning to operate 15,000 locations by 2020.

Tully’s Coffee (206-233-2070) is planning to expand further in the western region during the year. The chain of gourmet coffee shops currently operates 128 locations. An initial public offering would fund the opening of 30 to 40 company-owned units in the next year.

Planet Beach (780-439-1615) is planning to open a tanning salon in the Tampa, FL market during the coming year with an additional five franchised locations opening throughout the same area. The company has 300 units operating nationwide and is expanding at the rate of approximately 10 openings monthly.

Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) is planning to open a store at the Metrocenter Mall in Jackson, MS during October 2008. The store will be located on the first level of the former Gayfer’s store. The department stores offer discounted designer and name brand merchandise, such as apparel, coats, shoes, linens, baby items and home décor.

Target (612-304-6073) is planning to open a store at the site of the former Cottonwood Creek Mall at the intersection of Parks Highway and Palmer-Wasilla Highway in Valley, AK during October 2008. Area retailers include a Wells Fargo Bank and Taco Bell.

Scheels All Sports (701-232-3665) is planning to open a 100,000 sq.ft. store at the Rushmore Crossing center located on the south side of Interstate 90 in Rapid City, SD. The sporting goods store is scheduled to open during March 2009. The company currently operates 23 locations throughout IA, MN, MT, ND, NE, SD and WI.


Peterbrooke Chocolatier, Inc. (904-483-5302) is planning to open eight locations in the Atlanta, GA market during the year. The company, offering such items as milk chocolate-covered popcorn, with a $13 price tag for 12 ounces, prefers to locate in lifestyle centers and neighborhood locations and cotenant with wine stores. Growth is franchise driven. 

Walgreens (847-914-2500) is planning to operate 7,000 drug stores by 2010. The company currently operates 5,600 locations nationwide and in Puerto Rico.

Luigi’s Pizza (630-896-9861) is planning to open restaurants throughout the west valley and in the southeast valley markets of AZ. The company currently operates six locations throughout the east valley and plans to have 25 locations open within five years. Areas of particular interest include Johnson Ranch and Queen Creek.

Joe’s Sports, Outdoor & More (503-682-2242) is planning to open locations throughout ID and Meridian and Spokane, WA during the year. The sporting goods and outdoor retailer currently operates 27 locations throughout OR and WA and recently changed its name from G.I. Joe’s.

Ikea (610-834-0180) is planning to open a 353,000 sq.ft. home furnishings store at the Tampa International Center located near the intersection of Adamo Drive and Crosstown Expressway in Tampa, FL. Construction is scheduled to commence spring 2008 with an opening slated for spring 2009.

Barnes & Noble (212-633-3300) is planning to open a 33,000 sq.ft. bookstore at the site of the former United Artists movie theater at the Chesterfield Towne Center located in Midlothian, VA. The store is scheduled to open during early 2008. The company currently operates 793 locations nationwide offering a variety of books, magazines and music.

Fantastic Sams (978-232-5600) is planning to open 30 to 40 locations throughout Long Island, NY during the next three to five years. The hair salon chain currently operates 1,350 locations nationwide.
